Hi im Gav

Car isnt mine its my girlfriends, its a 2000 v plate A140

Anyways recently the engine has developed a number of odd noises

there are 2 main noises one when accelerating it almost sounds like an elctric motor in the back ground that get louder as the revs increase

the second only has only happened twice or so it happens when the engine is idling , it sounds like metal catching and twanging and bouncing and grinding

Anyone have any ideas

though its probably irrelevant the central locking pump has just failed, il be putting a new part in tomo.

the engine seems to get very hot though the indicator lamp doesnt come on ?????

Please help

i cant take it to a merc garage for a number of reasons
-im in gwynedd north wales
-im a student and cant afford it

Thanks for any advice/help

I think you may have a problem with the poly v belt ..possibly the idler pulley needs replacing .. get a mechanic to have a look and check the belt and report back..someone will keep you right..

i had a good read on an indepth mercedes a class website linked on here and from the sounds of it your right.

the noise is coming from the left hand side of the engine (facing the front of the car)

what will happen damage wise how long will it last making these noises?

because ideally i would like to wait till xmas holidays when i go home and my brother and i will replace the pulley which will mean £30 for the part not £300000000000 from mercedes ( a little exagerated)

the reason i will never go back to mercedes is because the last major service cost £1100 to replace one front spring 2 front dampers and a general service and they actually ended up screwing the electrics so its been back a couple times since. but anyways the parts in the service came to £200 and i will in future do it at home with my bro.

a local garage has a star machine so a quick pop in there if anything needs cancelling

an idler or tensioner pulley is seconded.

how long it will last is a 'piece of string question', although i have been assured that a piece of string is always 12.5".

changing it is a beach on an a class, all done from underneath, and getting the belt back on and tensioned is well fierce.

ye i have done that on last repair costing only £50 for 2 hours work and the part whereas mercedes wouldve been atleast double

Any idea roughly how much an inspection would be at a garage like really rough are we saying £10-20 , £20-40 £40+

if its only gunna be a few quid il get it looked at to confirm.

But im almost positive now that it is the idler pulley area

Can i inspect it myself?

how high in the air can you get it? what range of tools do you have? and cruically, what experience do you have of fiddly finger trapping jobs in modern compact engine bays? the pulley noise can be traced with a screwdriver, blunt end pressed tight against the earlobe, sharp end on the supporting body of the suspect pulley, but..........

IF YOU DO THIS AND SCREWDRIVER SLIPS AND PULLEY PUSHES IT INTO THE SIDE OF YOUR HEAD I DISCLAIM ALL RESPONSIBILITY

......but that is what we mechanics will do, albeit with the car raised above our heads and with adequate illumination etc.
