w201 (190) overheating

I have a 190 (1993) 2.0L auto. in traffic the temp goes upto nearly 110oc but then goes back to normal when moving. I have checked the coolant level, radiator and fan, all fine. what else could it be? I would be grateful for any advice. thanks

does your fan kick in when the car's hot at 110c?

if it doesn't-then your fan switch is faulty-it is located on the front left handside of the cylinder head-it has a three pin connector.

cheap fix for about a tenner for the switch.-

i had the same problem-and a full discussion should be in the archives-just do a search by pressing the search tab at the top and entering key words such as 'engine overheating'.

thank you I have checked the fan and yes it does come on when the engine is hot but it will not go around nearly as fast as it should.

first check fuse number 10- ( from memory,i think)- in the fusebox-this is the fuse for the fan-if faulty,replace it.

second, if problem not sorted, then sounds as if your electromagnetic clutch is not clicking to fully engage the cooling fan and if your fan is hence freewheeling when the car is hot,then the fan switch could be faulty as i said before.

you can check if your fan switch is working as follows.

firstly, remove the 3 pin connector from the fan switch-(the engine should be off and keys out of the ignition switch)

secondly, bridge the the two connections on the the connector with a short piece off copper wire(the keys should be in the ignition and turned until the ignition lights come on-). if your fan switch is working correctly,you should hear a click,indicating the electromagetic clutch on the fan is working correctly,to help engage the fan.

if you do not hear the click,your fan switch is faulty.

Sunil - you are referring to the viscous/engine fan cutting in, right (ie not an electric fan)?

there are two types of fan systems- viscous

and the other is an electromagnetic clutch operated fan-the one i am talking referring to in my earlier posts was the the electromagntic clutch fan which is activated by a fan switch.

i was discussing the 190e models in my previous posts.

do not know if the c180 has a viscous fan or not.

maybe some other owners with that model would know.
