w202 Autobox screwing me around

Hi..

my w202k seems to have bit of a problem with its gearbox.
When i start it it has no indication on the dash which gear its in & only lets me put it in either drive or neutral..
When i switch it orf it will go in park and then i can restart & play with drive or neutral again.
If i switch it off & leave it for a while it will show what gear its in & then its all fine until the next morning.. seems to be ok if i restart when warm but if left for a long time it plays up again.

Any ideas?

Ive been to mercedes & had oil level checked..

They said its probably the gearbox control unit which is inside box and will cost over £1000 to replace..common fault on the w202.

I thought the control unit is in the passenger footwell?

They also said the fault wont show up on a stars test..so how do you test it without taking box to bits?

Changed the oil and filter in the box & seemed ok for a bit until..

It is very strange but..if i leave the car for about a week, the dash all lights up all pixels showing clearly (it has pixel faults) and then the gearbox goes mad again..wont show correct gear selection on dash and wont change up.

Sit for a few mins try again,& again, drive for a bit..then it clears itself and after driving for about five days the pixels on the dash slowly disappear again and gearbox is fine!!

How weird is that??

Must have done this around 5 times now so its not a intermittent fault.

Any ideas?

Im thinking of charging the battery to see if the pixels come back again with full charge.
