The column operating stick for the cruise control has stopped 'operating'; it feels like a limp stick of celery. When pressed inward, the light is visible but nothing else seems to work. Does this mean a new unit and how much is this going to set me back. To be honest, I rarely use it and can easily live without out it but, like most of us, I am one of those guys who like 'everything to work' regardless.

Around £80 I think, plus take off the steering wheel to get to it

Which is at fault?

Hi Malcolm

Like 'Newtomerc' I rarely use my speed control stick and it worked just fine the last time I tried it. However, it is my impression that this is quite a durable & sturdy control and unlikely to develop a fault unless heavily used, and therefore worn, or abused. Could the fault lay elsewhere, i.e. not the stick but maybe in the wiring or the logic board?

We get about 10-15 a year where these things go bad, mostly bad contacts, some damaged by children, it is sprung loaded and should stay in the center position. Difficult with feeling the thing

Pressing the stalk inwards till the light goes on is for the speed limiter not for the cruise control.

Have you had it working in the past? Just checking that you are operating it correctly (as your name says you are new to Mercedes)?

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
They are often on eBay - your problem will be getting one for your model, although I think they are the same stalk on many models so you may be in luck....

Why don't you use it though - it's soooo restful on motorways, and even on ordinary roads if the traffic is quiet, I just leave a decent distance between me and car in front and set it - it improves my fuel consumption enormously you should get it fixed and use it - fabulous where there are speed cameras about as well.

Hawk, VMT for your interest. The simple answer to your question is NO; I have not used it before as living in the country I haven't really had the need, or indeed , the opportunity since acquiring the vehicle a few months back.. It was only recently that I decided to give it a go on the M25. I flipped the switch upward i.a.w. manual instructions.; the stick felt 'limp' ,(cetainly NOT spring loaded) and flops down after being lifted, and, what's more to the point, absolutely nothing happens.
Perhaps I'm not operating it properly as you suggest. I would appreciate enlightenment in this respect. Regards, Peter.

Broken cruise/speed limit control?

'felt limp' ... 'flops down' ... suggests to me a broken stick mechanism. Mine does not feel limp or floppy and you can feel the spring as you depress the stick to change from cruise to speed limit.

It looks like Malcolm was correct, the stick control and/or contacts is/are broken.

Have a very close look at it. The stick can pop out of its mounting and can be refitted, although I have always found it easier to remove the unit to get it back together. This involves removing the wheel, so you might need assistance. I have a secondhand spare if you are near west sussex.

Uncle Benz, VMT for your comment and your kind offer. I have obtained a replacement stick from a dismantler. Is this a job for the garage or do you think I could tackle it?

Don't switch the ignition on with the airbag disconnected or you will need to get the warning light switched off with a Star machine. Mark the wheel and column before you remove the wheel so you can get it back on straight. Don't turn the "clock spring" unit (that carries the electrics through to the wheel) when it is removed. It will break if it does not go back on in the same place.

Other than that, it's a walk in the park...

Providing you can undo the steering wheel bolt. No electric impact tool would shift mine, had to use the wheel air line tool

36" breaker bar and an assistant to hold the wheel is the norm.

It is bad practice to use the steering lock to hold the wheel from turning.

Yes agreed,,I held the wheel while the impact drill took it off, we all pulled all we could with a long bar,,its torqued to 90Nm

The I just rested the air bag in the wheel and drove home500yds
