I'm at risk of answering my own question here - but would appreciate other's thoughts.

Petrol smell from the rear on the filler cap side after stopping at the end of the journey - very noticeable as you open the drivers door.

After checking the haynes manual (brought today - I'm a new owner) I see the filter and pump are on that side of the car. Can I suggest a small leak from one of the joints here leaking onto the protective tray - builds up on a run and then evaporates after stopping (haven't noticed the smell first thing in the morning, so assume it's all gone by the, or the lower temp means it's less noticeable).

Any thought on whether it's likely to be just lines/clips or the pump/filer itself. Also do I need special clips, or plain jubilie clips.

Hi there,
Most likely your smell is coming from a leaking rubber pipe, either from the pump to filter or from the filter to the delivery line. They perish with age which makes them swell up and leak. 4 10mm plastic nuts hold up the cover under the pump filter assembly. replace the clips with the lines to be sure. There is nothing about the filter which can leak.
The clips are a screw clamp type, but most people use jubilie clips

If you cant see a leak from the filter/pump assmebley, then there is a breather hose which goes from the filler cap to the tank behind the o/s/r wheel which if perished can splitt and cause fuel smells. take a look
