W202 CDI auto gearbox problem - HELP NEEDED!

My C220 CDI estate (03/1999) has a strange problem. The auto gearbox is fully functional when in D, R, N or P mode, but wont let me change down to the «manual» part...: 4,3,2 and 1. The lever simply refuses to move downwards. Is this a serious problem? Anyone with the same experience out there? ...thnks, I really need the help!

Down??? or left and right??

My w210 moves left and right in "manual" mode.

This is a W202 (06/1999), there's no «sequencial» mode!
