Re: W203 C200 Kompressor

Approaching a red light today, I put my car in neutural, coasted to a stop then applied the parking brake. The air cond was on, car operating in normal temperature and the outside temperature was just like any other warm summer day. Came the green light, handbrake released, gear into drive but all the sudden, engine cut out (You remember the days when you were a learner on a manual car stalling!!!!). I put the car into neutral, turned on the ignition, engine started. Bravo off I go... but no, the same thing happened. It just cut itself out with no warning light or anything else. So this time round, I switched off the air cond, put the gear into netural and turned on the ignition. The engine came on. I revved it a little then put it into drive and finally, off I went and no problem since (fingers crossed).

The car carries a FSH and was driving fine before and after the engine cut out. There was no warning light indication. However it was on its last quarter of petrol (no empty tank warning though) and the car was positioned slightly uphill if this means anything? I hope this is nothing more than the law of gravity coupled by a nearly empty tank. Please advice.

Hi kit820

My Merc', a slightly older one than yours and an earlier model, has never had the kind of problems you have experienced, even when the fuel gauge has read '0'. Experience has shown me that even with a zero reading there is still between 1 and 2 gallons of fuel in the tank. I think fuel starvation is unlikely to be the cause. What makes you think it was a fuel problem?

I have encountered similar symptoms caused by a dirty fuel filter. This could cause rough running and a cutting out. If the problem clears itself it is likely to reappear just when you least expect it.

I am left wondering whether the problem could be electrical.

REGARDS Phil
