I am looking to carry out an oil and filter change on my 2004 W203 C220cdi. This would be the first I have done on this car, even though I have serviced most of my cars since I started to drive (30+ years ago). Following my philosify of not starting a job without knowing what I am doing I have been looking for some instructions but without any real sucess. What I am after is :-

1. Location of sump plug
2. Do I need to replace the sealing washer
3. What is torque setting when replacing sump plug
4. Where is the filter (Am I right in thinking it is the black canister on the top of the engine?)
5. How is the filter removed and what is torque setting upon replacement
6. Any particular difficulties I might encounter.

I would be most grateful for any details.

Ken, though I cant tell where the sump plug (normally rear of engine)is or the toque it is no different to any other, Yes the oil filter unscrews from the top, when you replace, oil the rubber O ring and do up hand tight, as with your other cars do it when warm and leave it to drain fo 20 mins. You do not replace the copper ring on drain plug, do it up tight as you have done on other cars. It really is straight forward.

without resorting to walking to the end of the drive in the dark I am pretty sure that the oil filter housing cap has the direction and torque to tighten to(possibly 18Nm???) moulded into the caps domed surface. I bought the right tool for it from merc commercial dealer for about £8 for an approx 70mm multi faceted socket.

The sump plug is 13mm., rear right corner of sump looking under the bonnet. Use a well-fitting socket or ring spanner to avoid chewing it up (if it isn't already!) as they're usually pretty tight to remove. Tighten to 30NM. Oil filter to 25NM.
Don't be tempted to overfill the sump, keep it between the marks.
