I bought a used W203 C200K sedan ( Year 2001 ) recently and noticed that the car does not come with the usual MB cloth toolbag. In fact, there are hardly any tools; apart from the spare tyre & jack, the only tools in the wheel well tray are a lugnut wrench, a towing eye bolt, a wheel centering bolt, a wheel chock and a set of spare lugnuts. There are no pliers, wrenches or even a screwdriver.

Can someone confirm if these are the only tools that come with the car, or am I missing anything? Thanks.

I know what you mean. My last 2 vans came from merc with a small tool kit in a vinyl bag which from memory(I am not going out to look now) consists of something like - 10/13mm and 15/17mm open ended spanners, screwdriver with changeable shafts(1 x double ended torx and 1 x double ended straight/pozi) and possibly a small crappy pair of pliers. These are in addition to the wheel changing tools and are there so you can attempt to deal with any minor problems whilst on the road. I would have thought you should also have something similar. Pop into a merc dealer and ask to see what the current cars come with, you might get some strange looks but if you, like me, have to have everything just so, then it should give you an idea of what you are trying to track down.

Did a bit more research, popped into the dealer's parts department, chatted with one of the service managers and guess what I found out? The early W203's actually did come with a blue cloth toolkit roll, similar to that with the W202's. The later W203's did away with this, part of the general cheapening of materials & cost reductions, I guess. For those who may be interested, the part no. is a2035800003 and contains the following :

1. a0005810317 - Reversible screwdriver
2. a1205810246 - Lugnut wrench
3. a0005810654 - Fuse Pliers
4. a1295810038 - Channel-lock pliers
5. a1264030074 - Wheel centering pin
6. a1405890101 - Open-end wrench 8/10
7. a1405890001 - Open-end wrench 13/17

And the cloth tie-up bag, of course. I assume that the previous owner 'retained' this toolbag, and left me with only the lugnut wrench & wheel pin. I am now looking around ebay to try to get a replacement set on the cheap!

The tie up tool rolls do not last long, why not make up your own nice little tool kit in a padded small box, Open ended spanners are on not much use, at least buy the ones with a ring the other end.

Malcolm, I think you are missing the point. It would seem that SV4 requires a certain authenticity and originality as he has gone to the trouble of visiting the dealer and identifying the originals. I agree it would be a lot easier and mechanically superior to make up his own tool kit but this is a compromise that would haunt his every waking hour!!!! He seems to suffer from a similar obsessiveness as I do. Perhaps we should get together to form a support group for other poor individuals who are similarly afflicted.

I suspect you could sign most of us up! -
I want a cup holder but I won't consider anything other than the proper centre console transformer style item and the only one that came up on ebay went for nearly £100! - I'll balance a can on my knee before putting some non MB item in there and as for sticking anything to the dash......

Welcome to the MBClub Obsessive Compulsive Support Group! :) I have managed to get a W202 toolbag ( it's the same as the W203's ) from the breaker's yard that is missing the lug wrench, so I now have the 'complete toolkit'. Also found the missing Owner's Manual ( under the front seat! ), and now discover that I'm missing the First Aid kit....so here we go hunting again...

If your interested I'm going to Toronto in the summer and the cup holder is a standard fitment in Canada. I could try and find you one if your really desperate.

Thanks for the offer but I don't need one, its just a nice to have really. I've been to Toronto a couple of times in the past couple of years and will probably return before too long. Nice city and a lot nicer in the summer! Beach is great. I looked at moving out there a couple of years ago, but it just ain't Yorkshire. Good thinking though, I have a relative that changes his E500 every few weeks (it seems) - perhaps I'll ask him to 'borrow' his before he trades in again!

Went back to the breaker's yard yesterday & got my first aid kit. It's a wonder what you can get if you spend some time rummaging around these places! However, the kit's contents were separated into 2 packages, one sterile and the other non-sterile. The non-sterile pack was past it's expiry date, but I managed to replenish it's contents at the local pharmacy. Beats paying the dealer 40 quid for a new kit!;)

Minimalist toolkit, or maybe none.

Hi All

Would I be correct in thinking that the number and quality of tools supplied with M-B passenger cars has reduced over the years and all you get these days are sufficient tools to change a wheel (say) and maybe a set of spare fuses?

My 2000 C230K came with a cloth toolroll and a useful selection of tools but no spare fuses. I recently acquired a new and genuine M-B 'wheel centre' with sufficient tools for changing a wheel but that is all. The clean cotton gloves was a nice touch.

I obtained a genuine M-B mini air compressor a few years ago and what a little marvel it is to. But was this item ever part of a standard M-B toolkit?

Could it be that one day M-B will not supply a basic toolkit in the interest of saving money?

How different is the standard toolkit of today different to M-B cars of 20 (say) years ago? Where would I obtain details of standard M-B toolkits?

I think that all MB cars should come with Comand and a STAR diagnostic built into the Comand. Also a 4 wheel auto alignment testing program, a voltmeter meter would be useful too ;)

Not too long before they will be self diagnosing and downloading updates over the internet like a pc does. Then we'll have messages flashing up on command saying that an update has failed and we should visit the workshop - or you'll suddenly find your dashboard rebooting at 80mph .......
We'll also have warranty claims refused because your car has snitched on you about something or other to the MB central server - big brother here we come !
