I went to merc spec today wit ha rattle coming from my 1999 W208 200. The advised me it was the belt dampner? Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this and how hard to job was to do at all? And possibly a part number if any one would know it? I've never heard of a belt damper.

Thanks

Ben

presdumably this noise is most pronounced at idle? if by damper you mean the belt tensioner, this is not uncommon. if you car is a kompressor variant it will have two of these, so be sure you get the right one. they are dead easy to fit but some are quite pricey indeed. hope that helps ben (is it ben?)

Not expensive to have it done in the garage 1hours labour, but I would have the belt changed also while they are at it, parts approx- £100

i doubt you can get this part anywhere but MB. to fit it should only take 1/2 hr max. it is help on by 2 or 3 bolts with male torx heads, not sure of the size. the old tensioner needs to be turned anticlockwise with the 17mm tewin-hex casting below the tensioner wheel. then you may need to lock it with a 4 or 5mm pin - just look at the new one which comes with a throw away locking pin fitted to aid assembly. with the tensioner locked and the belt out of the way just unbolt and swap over. if it seems difficult when you get going that is because nothing is REALLY simple and a mechanics job is not that easy after all! but get back on here if you are struggling.

hi there
our slk(200 kompressor) rattles just the same on tickover,i thought it was the supercharger, when you run it with the belt off it is sweet as a nut, there is an idler pulley and the tensioner pulley, how do you know which is the cause of the noise? brilliant forum by the way, just crammed with usefull info, regards simon

Hello Simon you do have the damper and the idler, and any of these thing could cause a rattle, if you undo the top bot on the damper you could check that out, all in this link
