Should I be able to feel any engine vibration at all through the steering wheel at idle on an E300TD? If not, then I guess I need to renew some mountings. 2 x engine and 1 x transmission are obvious candidates but I've read somwhere about a steering damper. What's that? Any other mountings I should consider (assuming teh vibration is not normal)? MIne's done 77k by the way.

Cheers.

Vibration

Hi Dave

I would go with your first guess check both engine mounts as it is quite common, also make sure the exhaust is not touching the underbody anywhere. The steering damper would not produce a vibration at tick over but it is very common for them to leak and they look like a small shock absorber mounted horizontally behind main subframe cross member.

Your Mercedes
A diesel
I wouldn't be to worried. All the ones I have driven viabrate to a greater or lesser degree.
Mine exibits this but it seems to vary. I put this down to ambiant and engine temperatures causing harder combustion at idle.

Hi, Try checking the damper on the fanbelt tentioner this can cause vibration on idle, also the metal oil feeds which cross the chassis member under the screen wash bottle can cause bad cabin vibration if the rubber mountings have failed. Nice cheap fix )
