I am wondering if someone may be able to help me. A friend has asked me to look at a W210 Limmo. It has the early type key with the single button and under the mirror green and red light. The car does not show any ignition light when key turned. The engine turns over but does not start. The central locking does not work and the main windows do not work (the extra windows at the back do work). A new key has been obtained and coded from MB so no battery problems! All problem invoving damp and bad connections have been hopefully checked out as well as fuses. The green and red lights flash when ignition on.
Any ideas please? The car is a petrol 6 cylinder and I think 1997.

Cheers John

I would normally say that the immobiliser problem was down to duff batteries in the key. It's not unknown for MB to supply dodgy keys, but its difficult to prove.

I can't remember the sequence of flashes from the mirror lights when turning the ignition on or using the key fob, but I thought that if they all flashed then the key wasn't recognised. Did MB check that it was coded into the car using STAR?

The central locking is pneumatically activated on this vehicle. The pump is situated under the rear seat normally (left side of car when viewed from the front). A leak, blown fuse or blown pump can cause the central locking to fail. If it works when you use the dash mounted activation switch then the problem is the key. If the vehicle has had a chassis extension then I would suspect a leak. The pipework (grey plastic) runs inside the electrical channels down each side of the car. Remove the carpet and kick plates along the sills to access.

Are there any indications of activity from the windows? It could be a blown fuse - yet again - or a duff controller (there's just the one on this vehicle, rather than one in each door - unlikely if the back windows work) or mechanical failure. I'd remove a door card to inspect the mechanism after checking fuses.

Thank you for your quick response. The central locking unit does not make any sound when key is operated as I have said myself and others have done a fairly extensive check on fuses, connections and most of the wiring (that doesn't mean that's not where the fault is!). The car is obviously inhibited but would that also mean the ignition light (battery picture) does not illuminate. We still have the original key with new battery as well as the new key coded by MB from the cars vin.
A circuit diagram would be most helpful!
There is no activity from the normal front and rear windows. The extra rear ones do work but probably a different circuit.

Did you try the central locking activation button on the dash, centre console?

So none of the original windows work? That sounds like the controller unit.

I'm wondering whether the car may have a problem with the CAN bus.

Have you managed to locate the pump? It's right next to the fuse box under the rear seat.

I take it that you've already pulled the carpets back in order to check the wiring and pipe work extensions added to the car. Was it extended just behind the front seats?

I have not tried the central locking button in the car yet but I have checked out the pump unit. Could you tell me where the control unit is for the windows please?
I still think that the fault is with the inhibit system. What do you think?

Hi Television. Yes the dash all lights up and fuel gauge reads but no ignition light. The car turns over but does not start. Thanks for the drawings I will check out with the car on Monday. Any other ideas? :D.

I had thought about the switch. I have unplugged the connector and everything looked okay but I did not check the switch for connectivity. Another Monday job! Now I have some drawings I should see which connections should be 12v or not when switched. I forgot to ask (looking at one of your other posts), should the new key be syncronised as you described in the DIY section please?

Cheers John

Thank you Television for the diagrams. The state of play so far is:
I have checked the ignition switch and it is okay.
The central locking button in the car does not work.
Neither of the keys seem to synchronise!

I am now suspecting that there may be a fault on the can bus. At present the faults are:
No central locking
No electric windows
No interior courtesy lights
No ignition light on speedo pod
Car not starting

Any ideas please?

Cheers John

On further investigation it was found that there is no communication with any of the systems via the 'OBD' apart from the Climate Control. Also that there appears to be no data or voltages on the CAN bus lines!
I am hoping that someone may be able to tell me where the CAN lines are all joined up to save me pulling the whole car apart please! This will help me investigate further. This car is now becoming a nightmare but I am sure that there is one main problem, but finding it has been very time consuming.

Please please can anyone help me?

Cheers John

Sorry to bring this thread to life again but I have spent some more time with this car. It apears that someone else had been at it before me! I have now got the electric windows all working and the central locking is working only from the dashboard switch. I have also had the car running!
The problems now are that the remote (keys) will not lock unlock the central locking, the courtesy lights do not come on when a door is opened, (only with the switch) and the car intermitantly starts and runs but then intermitantly stalls.
I am hoping someone may help me out. I have tried resyncing the keys but no change. I am now getting desperate!

Cheers John

It appears that when the car does not start there is no voltage supply to the fuel pump. Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing how the supply to the fuel pump is fed please?

If the immobilizer is still on the car will not start, the fuel pump only runs for a couple of second after first turning the key, it then waits for the signal from the CPS before it will start again

Hi television. I have connected a small lamp to the pump wiring which is now in the car so I know there is no power at all not even when it should be on for a few seconds. I am suspecting the fuel pump relay but I do not know where it is. By the way your in box for PM's is full as I tried to PM you.

I have found no relays in either of those two locations. Please bear in mind that this is a 1996 built vehicle.

The starting problem is now resolved! Two pcb mounted relays found in a 'relay module' had coils which were open circuit (one intermittant). These were replaced and the car now starts every time. The ABS light now also goes out!
I now have to sort out the central locking from the key and the courtesy lights that do not come on when a door is opened. It might be the same problem.
Any ideas please??

The central locking works with the dashboard switch but not with the key. A new key has already been purchased from Mercedes. Both keys start the car but the locks don't work with either. Batteries are all new and I have tried syncing them with your guide I found on this forum.
