W210 - Mobilo, gearbox, transmission generally

Reported earlier about this but without success - gearbox changes up and down (probably between 4 & 5) with a small but obvious kick. Fluids and filters changed (gearbox included) at around 40k and then this month at 80k along with service from excellent and very knowledgeable indie and had reported fault but everything good except still kicks. Earlier forum response highlighted MAF, and another has pointed to rear subframe bushes but MAF and bushes fine also another member has mentioned wiring as a potential problem. Can anyone shed any more light?

Unrelated to the problem above I wondered if MobiloLife can still be used even when using an indie? I fully realised that the conditions precluded using an indie when I opted out of authorised servicing but it was so poor locally that I chose my reliable indie but wonder if members have experienced any goodwill from MB or Mobilo if they have broken down?

You need this thread: -
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=45278

For cars the age of yours the rules are: -

Vehicles registered between 24 October 1998 to 31 December 2003

Period of unconditional cover: - 4 years (48 months) from initial registration. This includes minor mishaps cover.

Once the vehicle is 4 years old, it must be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions by a Mercedes-Benz Authorised Repairer to retain breakdown cover for a maximum of 30 years. If after year 4, the vehicle misses a service or a service is carried out outside the Mercedes-Benz network, MobiloLife does not apply and cannot be reinstated.

Maybe mods could consider this Mobilo info for a sticky as it keeps coming up. The info is not on the MB website and involved a lot of checking by me and then I had it all confirmed by MB before posting.

As for your gearbox RichardGill, I wonder if it could be a software problem. Certainly with the new 7 speed box jerky changes have been completely cured in many cases just by a software update -done free when being serviced if you tell them the problem. I don't know if there is one for your 5 speed box but might be worth asking.

Thousands of owners do not use dealer servicing and as a result many updates are never done and so faults persist that could so easily be cured. At least worth checking.

Hello Richard and welcome,, its always worth clearing the memory when the car is on STAR.

There is nothing listed for the problem, I id another search just in case, but nothing

I don't know the answer, but I am sure that where there is a systemmatic problem causing imperfect instuctions to the gearbox, as would be the case with MAF for example, then the lower changes would be very conspicuous and the kick gets less as you move up the box. Something restricted to just one gear change might therefore suggest a problem more local to the gearbox.

Thanks Malcolm & Alan

How do I clear the memory and what is STAR? Do I switch ignition on (not start) and then depress throttle for 5 secs to clear memory?

I wasn't clear enough in my earlier post - its difficult to tell when the kick occurs because on normal to speedy acceleration and deceleration it would be hard to pick up. It is noticeable when at level speed then slow deceleration or alternatively if I've gone up an incline and the box has shifted down a gear and then when levelling out without load the box will shift up - as the shift down occurs under load it is normal but the shift up is not under load and does not occur as expected (or as it used to).

I've noted other posts about the MAF so will check again and also I've noted in the archives of earlier posts problems with voltage and speed sensors. My indie will hook it up and see if there are any fault codes.

Yes STAR is the MB test gear.

Just a little about the MAF, the engine output (bhp) is closely married to the gearbox, if the output from the engine falls a little, say due to the MAF giving false information, then the gearbox may not be sure of what to do, in all your fault is not an easy one.

There various reset procedures floating around and many swear by them

My 2000 e 320 cdi used to do the same and i now put it down to driving style, i say this as when my father drives it there is a tendancy for it to do it but i have no problems.

This probably isnt much help but try adjusting your driving style, also give it a second because if i put mine into drive as soon as i start, i mean the second i can, it tends to stick in gear, you dont have to wait long about 5-10 seconds...

More haste, less speed
