Apologies, the temp gauge actually rises to between 60 and 70 degrees, only goes to 80 when stopped in traffic

If you give me the first six digits of the chassis no (VIN) I can locate it for you. But the question is why do you want to find the thermostat? Most thermostats are set to open at 75 degrees, therefore reaching 80 degrees for a short period is not unusual.

OK, this is a 111.957 engine and to find the thermostat - follow the pipe from the top of the radiator and where it connects is the thermostat housing. This housing is held by three bolts. This is a one piece unit, ie ; the housing/casing and the thermostat are one piece. When you remove it if the thermostat is stuck open then this is the problem. But if its closed (water tight) its not the problem. They are known to stick open on one side and this could cause your low temperature problem. However please note there are many other faults that could cause low temperatures.

On a similar note, is it possible to drain the coolant from the engine block of an OM606 by accessing the bolt from above, or do I need to get underneath?

Finally got around to changing thermostat, releatively easy diy job. Seems to have worked, temp gauge now reading 80. Not the cheapest thermostat that I have replaced (thinking back to the ford escort days etc.), worked out around €44- (£30) incl vat.
