I have just bought an 04 W211 320 (Petrol) estate that has had a replacement engine fitted. The emissions light is permanently on, and sometimes when staring the engine I get an ESP failure warning. I am told, but have not confirmed that the replacement engine is from an 05 SL. The car feels very sluggish, especially at very low speed and between 50 – 70 mph. With ESP switched off the car feels much better, but still not quite right. I suspect that the engine mapping is wrong for the car-engine combination, but frankly this is just a guess.

Any suggestions about what to check, or can someone recommend a Merc specialist/tuner not to far from London.

Incidentally, would this car have left the factory with a straight 6 or a v6?

Thanks

Piers

If the EML light is on then the engine is in restricted power mode, this is to try to prevent any damage occurring.

I would recommend you go to your nearest Mercedes-Benz retailer or Indie ASAP. Not much you can do unless you have a Star machine. You need to run a full systems check and if what you say is true then a new ECU may be required.

Have you done the hand and eye checks on the engine? Pull the covers off and check all electrical and pipe connections are correct.

On the 211 '04' models it should have been a V6 engine.

Hope you got this car cheap, if it's the ECU you could be looking at £2000 for the correct one.

Oh! Nearly forgot.

If you have Mobilo cover you can call them out and get them to diagnose it for you. Some of the guys are pretty damn good at diagnosis. If that fails at least they'll get your car to the local Mercedes-Benz retailer free of charge.

thanks, the car was 5K under the trade valuation, so I have budgeted for 'work needed'. I will get it booked in
