Hi - the 5-speed auto box in my W211 E320 petrol e-class has an intermittent fault. When you start the car there is no gearbox info on the dashboard (ie. next to the mileage - no P, D, R etc and no S or W) and the trip-tronic selection doesn't work. The gearbox then stays in first gear. When you stop and switch off the engine, the gearbox will only go to Neutral, not Park. Start it up again and everything is OK. Last oil and filter change was 30,000 miles ago. Swith on side of gearbox was changed at last gearbox service. Car has done 145,000 miles. Any suggestions?

There should be a logged fault in the diagnostic memory buddy

Hi Wighty - last time it came up with a canbus error, and the reader could not communicate with the engine. It's going into my Indie's garage on Friday, who doesn't have Star but has a sophisticated reader. We'll see what that reveals. Thanks anyway. Might start looking for that CLS500 I've had my mind on!

Star - what do you mean by the gear shifter - the stick inside the car? Sorry to sound so ignorant but I'm not a mechanic.

Mainly Mercedes
Most commonly the gear selector module gives the symptoms you describe. It's the unit with the gear lever attached to it.

Update - gear selector unit removed and taken to a local repair centre (ECU Testing Ltd, Heanor, Derbyshire) - it was faulty, repaired same day, cost £230. Cheap at twice the price. Just got to refit it now. regards.
