2018 E220d W213, has an audible tick for a couple of seconds on cold start. This doesn't sound like a normal timing chain rattle as an example it's a tick rather than a rattle. Anyone had experience of this previously? Has good history, a bit below 100k miles. I've searched the internet but not really found a similar issue/noise.

Hydraulic tappet. Not much to worry about if is. Normally a lift cam job if intend to change. Change of oil grade might shut it up. Does tapping go after flooring the accelerator a few times?

It only does it for a couple of seconds on a cold start. Don’t need to touch the accelerator for it to quieten down. Hasn’t long had an oil change, but will call the garage to check the oil used. May get it dropped again and filled with genuine Mercedes oil just to be sure.

One or more tappets draining down then I think. Check if ur manual list an in specc thicker oil or get 2nd opinion and if req change tappets. As ur not chasing the bolxxcks off the motor they will fill and shut up. Just irritating.

Doesn’t help my driveway is between my house and the neighbours so everything is amplified by the two houses which I think makes it sound worse. Although of course I’d like to catch a problem early if there were to be one. Hopefully a fresh oil change with Mercedes oil will quieten it down or shut it up completely.

If you used a.o garage then they probably used what what they have in a big drum.
Just see what they used and if meets the spec 229.5 - additional digit if the car has dpf

Rarely get tappets go wrong on this engine, cam followers and chains at higher miles. Exhaust flap motors can chatter too.

Have got a short video of the noise, link below. There's a bit of residue on the top of the engine from a little circle object, maybe a breather of some description.

Can hear the audible rattle and then it stop after a couple of seconds.

sounds fine to me. Did the service guys use A decent oil filter that prevents drain back of oil.
Seems this issues arise after the service.

There a slight start up noise, it could be the beginning of the common camshaft follower failure, the clearance on the cam/follower is increased, so the tappets have to over extend.

Update on your Update!! What's the current status of the MB w213 OM654 engine tappet saga? Has it been engineered out of the problem list?
Thanks, Jim.

For sure he will have to budget that in as his engine video had a hint of that thumping induction noise .

What a shame , the OM654 1950cc could of been a winner instead the older OM651 2143cc is a better longevity bet .
