w220 /s class fan belt problem? battery problem?

Had a problem the other night (it was chucking it down and it was half 11 at night - not a good start!)

Well all of a sudden the battery icon flashed up on the dash and the sat nav said the voltage was low (even though i was driving along so would have thought it would have charged ok). Anyway other warning signs started flashing up - EPS, airmatic etc advising me to go to the workshop and suddenly the power steering went (felt like i was trying to turn a 2 tonne truck without power steering - biceps got a good workout). Anyway pulled over popped the bonnet and it looked as if coolant was leaking. Opened the trunk too and it sounded as if there was a hissing sound near the battery. Called a recovery guy out and he advised the fan belt was shredded.

Does anyone know if this is simply just a fanbelt problem that has led to the battery loss and coolant leak or am i looking at a good old mercedes remortgage the house type repair job?

sounds like your broken belt has whacked a hole in the rad.

fill the system up and see where the leak is from

if from the rad you'll need to repair / replace so it will have to come out, which wil give room to fit new belt easier.

i know someone who may be able to repair the rad

Alternator pulley maybe suspect and damaded the belt.

If the rad is damaged you will see water under the car

Dependent on age of the vehicle check that the belt tensioner is still there - recently had one go on me. It shredded the belt in the process.

My alternators front bearing went awol and threw/tore the belt off.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my brothers fanbelt has just failed, on his 311 cdi (51 plate) brought home by the AA ! He's going to buy a new fanbelt and tensioner from the main dealers.
What we need to fit the new belt is a diagram.

Could anyone help please ?
