Hi there,

My father's E-class (less than 1 year old) has his rear windsreen smashed into pieces this morning. Basically when he released the boot using the remote control, the wind was so strong that it banged into the windscreen. He went to the dealer immediately but they reckon there's no case for a warranty claim.

What do you all reckon, is it a defect or we are just unlucky?

Thanks for your advice.

Not a manufacturing defect, I think it falls into the 'Act of God' section.

yep. act of God. however the e-class and c-class opening of boot lids is very dodgy in my opinion. they do spring up and dont seem to have enough check straping. and being honest it shouldn't strike the window in any cases whatsoever. so I would suggest a letter to MB and see if they will make a goodwill payment coz they should really have designed it to stop before it causes damage.

mine just releases and sits there waiting for me to lift it.

Act of God

Hi All

I agree, Act of God.

I hadn't owned my C-class for very long before I realised there was a slight risk of the boot lid hitting the rear windscreen. The previous owner warned he had to have one of the hinges repaired due to the boot lid opening too wide.

Every time I open the boot lid on the remote I make sure I catch the lid with my hand as it opens.

I will remember what might happen in a strong wind though.

REGARDS Phil

Good reminder

A very timely but costly reminder about the power of nature. I used my remote to unlock my boot at a Motorway Services yesterday without thinking about this risk of damage.
I would like to think MB would be generous on your claim, but I fear it would open a big precedent!
