Washer Reservoir - stinks real bad!!

Just wondering how many of you fine forum members have suffered with this one.

Washer bottle on an MB holds a large body of water which predominantly stays static for long periods. Now, static water gets stagnant after a while (sound familiar?) Try as I might, and i've tried several washer additives, garden hose flushing, fairy liquid, you name it - I can't get rid of the pen and ink for very long. First time the washers are used, up comes that horrible pong!

I know it's more of an irritant than a fault but it hardly adds to the driving experience.
Does anybody have a miracle cure or a 'special potion' for this one?

Cheers, DS.

ps: What's the betting Malcolm has?

I would have said that a good dose of washer anti freeze would do it, put in a more concentrated mix

The other thing that works is babies bottle cleaner,,Milton I think

If you use the proper Merc additives you will get several benefits:

1. sweet smell

2. non freezing water in winter

3. very clear screen

4. unblocked washers as there is a water softner agent in it and therefore hardwater scale build up will diminish.

5. competitive cost.

6. kind to paintwork.

I agreed, it the non Merc Screen washer fluid you buy from Tesco/ASDA, it the same supplier I believed.

Next time open it up and smell it before you part your money.

Evening Malcolm,

I bought some Milton bottle cleaner today from Tesco - will let you know how it performs. I guess I just wanted a recommendation of something I could use which wouldn't be unkind to the paintwork. I'm going to give the reservoir a good clean out and remove all traces of the yukky, smelly stuff. Something rots away in there and curdles. (Hope you're not having your dinner) lol.

Another Television top tip!

Thanks again, John.

Those Milton bottle cleaner is chlorine and is bad for your car paint work.

In that case it would be even worse for the baby

Babies are different, they put load of it in swimming pool. Chlorine is in fact a poison.

Thanks Dragon,

I should have added, (and for the benefit of any post readers) I don't intend to leave the fluid in the reservoir afterwards. Hopefully, the MF will help to clear out the nasties and sterilize things a bit. Once that's done, I will rinse it out thoroughly and top up with fresh water. The additive i've also purchased which contains preservation agents should keep it all lemon fresh!

Bit of a no-brainer I admit, but this is the only thing on the car that's bugging me at the moment.
S'pose I should consider myself fortunate!

Regards, DoverSole

It had been happening since last year, I didn't know they change the ingredients. It the sulphur dioxide that emitted if you leave it long enough.

An update to a post I started a while back.

My neighbour uses a couple of Steradent in his washer bottle!
I'd have to ask around as I don't have false teeth. Interesting remedy, though.
