on my v230 i loose water but no sign of a leak. Also theres a misfire when it starts from cold, could it be the head gasket?...the oil is clear of any mayo in the oil cap, and coolant is clean also.I've changed the plugs and leads, water pump, radiator, and thermostat...is there anything else to check before going down the head gasket route?

Cheers.

Sounds like a headgasket. If the gasket has failed across a water jacket into the cylinder then you wont get oil in the water and the classic mayo signs.

Compression test is the next port of call.

Another thing you can do is set the coolant level, get the engine nice and hot, before leaving it overnight release the coolant radiator cap and leave it off. This will release the pressure in the cooling system that will force water into the cylinder overnight. If it doesnt misfire in the morning or to a much lesser degree than usual then you will have a HG issue for sure.

I'll give that a go today....what do you think the average cost of repairing the HG at a garage. I know it's dependant on their hourly labour, but ball park figure.

Thanks for the help.

The overnight test Steve mentions proved the HG failure on my old 230E.
