what a difference a year makes! buying advice needed please

hello yet again guys :D
well the past year has been a nightmare
I lost my job :( and then at Christmas my wife was injured very badly and I have to now look after her...
anyway
the bills got out of hand (my fault!)
so I sold my Jaguar XF to settle the bills and bought a Transit van so at least I could earn a bit when I got time

so here I am yet again lol
I am skint! but I still have my wife and great family so I am rich !

so back to the question at hand

im looking at buying a diesel Merc 300d/td as they seem to run best on the cooking oil scenario
we have an astra bertone convertible at the moment but this is going soon as it is very hard to get in and out for the wife and uncomfortable
so I will have around £1000 to spend
I would like aircon and electrics if possible but being reliable and running on a 50/50 mix of clean new cooking oil and diesel is what I am looking at
age and looks are not important
I need it to last a year until the wife gets her mobility car (if the 2nd operation does not work:confused:)
I am wondering what choices are available to me but keep getting conflicting info
thanks in advance guys and it will be good to be back:D

these things are sent to test us mate
she is my wife and best mate so we will do what it takes to get on
I just think a nice comfy old Merc is the way to go

Great attitude and yep, a comfy older Merc sounds like it will fit the bill.

Sorry about the problems, Shaggy.

Depending on what injuries your wife had, might it not be better looking for something that's a bit higher off the ground ? - easier to get in and out?

124s with aircon aren't that common but you might strike it lucky

Usual places to look, PistonHeads, Gumtree, FleaBay, etc, etc

she loves the older Mercs and as long as it is not bucket style seats she would be ok0 although I would take her with me to buy so she could check it out

what about this model?
is it a different engine etc?

I have my trusty old C250TD estate that ran on bio fuel up for sale soon. Im just tidying it up a bit and by that I mean new exhaust, new front wings and a full service.

Ive just got a 203 estate so its surplus to requirements now. Its been a fantastic wagon. PM me if you are interested.

I have been looking at loads of C250 & E250/300 cars
there are plenty around if you are prepared to travel
a lot are rust buckets but that is to be expected in cars this old
there are 2 I like the look of so far
1 is described as having "aircon not as cold as it should be" a simple regass maybe?
the other is described as "had electric work done but needs to be put on star to reinstate seats mirrors cruise etc" sounds like a nightmare?
im in no immediate rush to get one so can keep looking

1st one, you might be lucky with a re-gas, but I suspect its leaking from the condensor, or somewhere else, I would be inclined to just leave it 'weak'.
The other.. who knows.. sounds abit suspect to me!

oil

if youre going to run it on 50% new oil and 50% diesel are you really saving anything unless youve access to really cheap new oil ,best would be to use well filtered used oil for the mix, and then 80% veg oil with petrol or if you prefer diesel better savings then

That looks a decent example if the photos are anything to go by. I'd take up the option of a fresh MOT myself, but I see its ONO anyway so room for some negociations;)
Look out for rust also around the boot lock, the headlight surrounds and the doors as well as the arches.
Can't help you with any engine pointers I'm afraid as oil burners are alien to me:shock:
Good luck!

Edit Yes it is pre facelift.
