Hi All,

A mate of a mate is selling a silver 2007 mercedes clk 200 sport with the full amg kit and wheels, parking sensors, heated seats, phone, automatic with paddle shift gears etc. He is moving to the states in a week and wants a rapid sale and is offering it to me for £21000. He has only done 150 miles and is basically brand new. What do you think? should i go for it and for people who own the car how is your experience. Also what is the residual value like on these car.Thanks.

Just make sure this guy is well known. If your mate vouches for him fair enough but normally bargains like this are a little too good to be true because they're not quite what they seem.
On an MB forecourt, this car will go for £6-7,000 more. I'd suspect he could hawk it round any used showroom and they'd buy it at that price so why is he offering it around - unless he's a nice bloke and figures he'd rather give the benefit to a mate than a dealer (sold my C class to my dad for the derisory trade in value so I can understand the motivation).
Perhaps I'm too sceptical but when it looks too good to be true, tread carefully ...

Good advice from jberks...............

The story doesnt quite add up to me.......
Why buy a brand new merc thats obvoiusly only a few weeks old (its only done 150 miles) and now hes moving to the USA. And he didnt know of this move before he bought the car?
I also would be wary...............

Thanks for your comments. I have checked out a bit more and he has said that it is a cat c as it was flood damaged in recent floods. I have seen the car and it is perfect, everything works and is brand new condition. i asked why he purchased if he knew he was going to the states and he told me that his brother was gong keep it but since then his brother purchased a new c class. Is it still worth it if it is listed at Cat C.

also he tells me that it was form a main MB dealer who just claimed insurance on almost all the cars on the forecourt due to the flooding.I have seen this car and driven it and everything is working fine. Has all the paper work.

HOWEVER...............I have often found gut instinct is a good indication on matters such as these.

How does yours feel?

The answer to that question should point in the direction which you should take.

Maybe.

Is the warranty and Mobilolife still valid? Without those then forget it.

What does your insurance company say about insuring it?

I wonder if he bought it fully working, or if it's been fixed? There have been a few on eBay - I can't immediately find a CLK that sold but here's what seems like a fairly desireable C Class Estate and that only went for £10,600:

There is a flood damaged CLK for sale at moment:

I'd want to know a lot more about it's history. What damage there was and what was done to fix it. Theoretically it could be fine and a bit of a bargain. Do remember though, bargain or not, it will be worth less than a normal one (and harder to shift) on resale.
I imagine the warranty, Mobilio, corrosion cover etc are void too, which is why the dealer can't sell it.

I remember you had a Cat D C Class - what was your experience when you came to sell that or do you still have it? If you buy this Cat C CLK then the resale value will always be proportionately less in the same way that you would be benefiting from the lower value now.

If your Cat D turned out to be a reasonable deal, then there's no reason this one won't as well.

Yeah...had a cat d c class 04 Which i purchased about a year ago and sold it on without losing anything, advertised it as Cat D so all interested people knew. I have found out that the warranty is void on the clk so i am asking him to sell a few thousand pounds cheaper if he agrees thats fine otherwise i think i will give it a miss. As jberks said, it will sell cheaper than the same model not listed as Cat C so if i can get it cheap enough and use it for a year or so and sell it on without a loss im happy with that. As for the damage everything works perfect the flood did not affect the engine as it was stationary so water did not manage to drown it.
