Just brought a merc today, now I haven't got my vehicle registration certificate yet as its been delayed through post, but wanted to know this.....

My car reg starts of as LS55 but I have seen other cars as LS05. Both of course meaning it was registered in 2005 but why 05 or 55, written like that?

Does a 55 mean it was reigstered in late 2005 compared to 05 which was early 2005?

Don't you know that?

05 from Mar 2005 to August 2005, 55 from Sept 2005 to Feb 2006.

The 55 means the second half of 2005. :p

I think the latest type of registration numbers are a complete mess. 2005 year could be either "54" "05" or "55" I personally think we should go back to one registration number for one year. eg. 05 = 2005. I know the system was introduced to help the motor trade. (New registration numbers encourage new sales) but 3 numbers for one year seems ott to me.

I partially agree with you but I think they should start 05 at the beginning of 2005 and start 55 at the middle of 2005 and so on, that would make more sense.

I think that the Southern Irish system is easily the most logical and easy to decipher. Also,I've noticed on more than a few cars with the 'new' British plates, owners are opting for the previous system's 3-letter area code as the 3 letter grouping on the new plates,i.e. someone from Anglesey for instance would hav *EY at the end of their reg. in order to retain some area identity. Oh,dear this made perfect sense in my head .

It makes perfect sense to me, but then I'm the bloke who's prepared to pay for a "traditional" area code on his plates ("PT" in my case). I know I'm an idiot, but it keeps me happy
