Received my BMC Air Filter today from Italy via CP4L as it was the cheapest way.... And fitted it in-between rain showers.

I know these things are a bit of a "Marmite" issue, but I like them, not necessarily for the claimed improved power, but I have found that they do improve overall Fuel Economy.

Having been brought up near the car factory in Oxford, I don't think I could trust any automotive product with the BMC brand on it

Drove it a little bit today. Not much as I'm a bit busy with real life at the moment but had a half hour or so so had a quick run around the block. Well, a bit further than that really. :)

It just reminded me why I bought it, pure relaxation. Still can't get the seat right yet though, I'm getting it there but still need a bit more time in the car to get it exactly how I want it.

Also managed to get the Lexus back from the dealership this week, now fitted with a brand new ignition module ECU. I've no idea what one of those is, but know that it will be extremely expensive coming from Lexus. Thank goodness for warranties...

The local dealership had never heard of one blowing before. I've always been lucky like that. :D

Taught it how to make rainbows.
Driving down the M5 in heavy rain and the rear tyres were chucking sprag everywhere and the sun catching the rooster tails of spray made awesome rainbows. Quite mesmerising!

The plan was that as we were going away to-morrow I was going to just knock the dust of the car because I do like to start off with a clean car. But when I got started I couldn't stop myself and gave it a thorough clean inside and out. :)

I think that is something I got from my Father. Every time he used his car he would wash and leather it off before he put it in the garage whether it was a mucky day or a dry day. Some of this obviously rubbed of on me, I just can't stop myself. I cannot stand a dirty car

I'm the same Andy, before we go on holiday, (of any distance), the car is washed, chamois'd dry, vacuumed out (boot too), windows cleaned properly and the interior is wiped down with a damp chamois. It's done again the minute we get back (or asap if it's a late return).

I also go over the whole car, lights and levels and a general check over to make sure all is well.

Swmbo calls it the "the Routine" and it drives her round the bend, usually because I find something that I need/want to change that she thinks is unnecessary, or will do a while longer.

Then follows the statement which she can't argue with, as it covers a multitude of sins, ;) "you can't put a price on our safety, dear". As I said, it drives her mad, I think because I never find something cheap, it's always expensive. :D

Sat in it whilst resorting to reading the manual, or at least one of the supplements to it.

I'm struggling to get the digital display set up how I had it on the E Class. On that, I had fuel figures to the left of the rev counter when in the progressive display, which is my preferred, with oil and water temps to the right, along with tyre pressures.

I can get the left hand side sorted on the S, but having no joy with the right at the moment as it's stubbornly just displaying the time and date. There are a few steering wheel button differences between the two cars, which seems to be the root of my issues. Looks like I've still got some more reading to do. :(

Got the seat better now though with some small adjustments...

Today? I filled up with petrol (always a worrying occasion) but concludes my 'real world' tests of which fuel I prefer for my 2014 CLS 63 Shooting Brake

So after running a tankful of each of the main brands for 'round town' and another tankful ' motorway cruising' the results are in

Shell V Power - more power on take off than 95 fuels - Mileage wise its good at a tad under 28 on motorway and around 22 round town / mixed. Pricey at 139.9/L
Tesco Momentum - more power on take off than 95 fuels AND Shell V Power- but also makes the car feel snatchy and a bit less comfortable. Mileage wise its good at a tad under 28 on motorway and around 23 round town / mixed. Reasonable price at 133.9
Sainsburies Premium 97 RON - Good power delivery, definitely not as sharp as Momentum or V Power - priced at 129.9 its good value - problem is I dont have a sainsburies local to me! 122.9p
Tesco Unleaded - Gives nice smooth power on take off - mileagewise its up there at 27.5 on mway and 22 round town - cant beat 123.9 though!
Asda Unleaded - Gives nice smooth power on take off - mileage just a tad lower than others. Same 123.9p/L

Conclusion: Tesco or Asda standard unleaded gives way better value for money (pence per mile) power delivery is good (I have enough whatever I put in the tank) but crucially seems less grabby at low revs off the mark.

And I will probably put Shell V Power in every 3rd or 4th tank for the supposed cleaning benefits.

Back to just driving and throwing receipts in the bin now!!

ps - I didn't try anything BP because no real humans can afford BP - after seeing them quote 153p/l on motorway services I wont be their juice on principle

Interesting. Things like power delivery are always a bit subjective but, like you, I’m struggling to convince myself that 97/98/99 of any brand is better than 95. I haven’t been as diligent as you in my research nor have I tried different brands against each other. I’m going more on good old “gut feeling”. However, I haven’t really seen any difference in fuel consumption whether I go for the basic or posh stuff!

Perhaps I’ll pay a bit more attention and try a bit more variety in the next few refuels (but I do have a convenient Sainsbury’s so that tends to be the local default option).
