Interesting. Things like power delivery are always a bit subjective but, like you, I’m struggling to convince myself that 97/98/99 of any brand is better than 95. I haven’t been as diligent as you in my research nor have I tried different brands against each other. I’m going more on good old “gut feeling”. However, I haven’t really seen any difference in fuel consumption whether I go for the basic or posh stuff!

Perhaps I’ll pay a bit more attention and try a bit more variety in the next few refuels (but I do have a convenient Sainsbury’s so that tends to be the local default option).

As you say it is subjective: - seat of the pants stuff - but as I have always enjoyed driving a wide variety of stuff from an aged Spitfire 1500 and a Montego Estate, through to 800BHP Twin Turbo Dodge SRT, A Supercharged Hummer and more recently a Maserati 4200 - I have got a pretty good idea of whats working.
For me - on the fuel there is either no difference in feel or a perception that I don't like the higher octanes - but actually working in the energy industries I do recognise that Shell put a lot of effort into the cleaning additives so its either use a proprietary fuel system cleaner once a year or the occasional tankful of expensive stuff.

My mileage can be anything from 1000 a week to nil - depends where I am working - this country or elsewhere so my cars frequently get to stand still in a garage for weeks at a time and I think (subjective again) a good fuel clean out is needed (ps I always fill the tank completely before storage as this reduces the amount (percentage) of volatile hydrocarbons that 'gas off'

Fitted new front fogs to the E class , the others had a brown discouloration that was irritating me , new ones were £36 from eBay for the pair .
Whilst the car was up on the ramps and the front 2 under shields were off , I decided to change the crankshaft position sensor that I bourght the other day . A precautionary change because the car is 10 years old . All the sensors I have changed before they failed I will keep in the boot just in case I'm on a trip , I'll have the spares available .
The Cps was a fairly easy change from below , I personally wouldn't have liked to do a change from the top without being able to see what I was doing . I did remove the right hand air filter box (as you face the engine) and managed to locate the sensor with a mechanics mirror and torch first .
There was a small heat shield surrounding the cps with a single bolt , and another same size bolt holding the cps . The cps came out easily and took maybe 20 mins to do .

Today? I filled up with petrol (always a worrying occasion) but concludes my 'real world' tests of which fuel I prefer for my 2014 CLS 63 Shooting Brake

So after running a tankful of each of the main brands for 'round town' and another tankful ' motorway cruising' the results are in

Shell V Power - more power on take off than 95 fuels - Mileage wise its good at a tad under 28 on motorway and around 22 round town / mixed. Pricey at 139.9/L
Tesco Momentum - more power on take off than 95 fuels AND Shell V Power- but also makes the car feel snatchy and a bit less comfortable. Mileage wise its good at a tad under 28 on motorway and around 23 round town / mixed. Reasonable price at 133.9
Sainsburies Premium 97 RON - Good power delivery, definitely not as sharp as Momentum or V Power - priced at 129.9 its good value - problem is I dont have a sainsburies local to me! 122.9p
Tesco Unleaded - Gives nice smooth power on take off - mileagewise its up there at 27.5 on mway and 22 round town - cant beat 123.9 though!
Asda Unleaded - Gives nice smooth power on take off - mileage just a tad lower than others. Same 123.9p/L

Conclusion: Tesco or Asda standard unleaded gives way better value for money (pence per mile) power delivery is good (I have enough whatever I put in the tank) but crucially seems less grabby at low revs off the mark.

And I will probably put Shell V Power in every 3rd or 4th tank for the supposed cleaning benefits.

Back to just driving and throwing receipts in the bin now!!

ps - I didn't try anything BP because no real humans can afford BP - after seeing them quote 153p/l on motorway services I wont be their juice on principle
Pretty much supports my findings in my Smart, the exception being the Smart needs 98 to run well.
Tesco Momentum was definitely what it was happiest with (and by some margin) with the Gulf super unleaded the next best. Shell was third and barely any better than Tesco unleaded. Standard Shell was dire.
The Smart is mapped to 102bhp (not bad from 700cc) and runs 1.5 bar so really needs decent fuel.

IMG_3973.JPG Did a 120 mile round trip in my Coupé to Cowdenbeath this afternoon/evening to watch the Stock Car Racing. It turned into a miserable wet night making the track very greasey and slippery, which although it slowed things down a little it made the racing very interesting. I made a vid of the F2 race but it won't upload because it says the file is too big to share, shame. IMG_3982.JPG

I had an ulterior motive for the trip tbh, I wanted to do a decent run that would help me bed in the brakes.

Now I'm totally pi$$ed off because the brake judder is still there, very slight but, still there, F*CK, F*CK, it's infinitesimal compared to how it was before I changed everything on the front brakes but I can feel it.

What the F*CK is the problem with this car??? It's driving me crazy.

Very slightly Alister, very strange. You can feel the thrumming more through the seat of your pants. Weird.

Does your car need 97/98/99 RON fuel? If not you wont see a difference, not a positive one anyway.

Isn't your CLS63 supposed to run on super unleaded fuel hence why the car runs better than when you use standard premium unleaded.

Absolutely right. It should run on 98. However, it actually feels 'nicer' on 95? I know it's subjective but there you go.
The engine and management system will adjust quite happily with 95 so no bad things are likely to happen. :)

It may be a rear that's the issue then.

I had come to the same conclusion and have spent most of today trying to figure it out on whether to renew everything at the back too. Even the Hand/foot brake shoes. I’ll see what the costs work out at and then make my decision. The thing puzzling me most of all is how two or maybe even three calipers can go at the same time and then I remember the cars age. Decisions decisions....

I think that’s the next step Wighty, do all the discs and calipers along with pads and shoes at the back and hopefully that’ll cure it.

Used to have a C63...
Put the new snow foam & lance to the test this morning, as car was due to a quick wash after many trips in cack weather.

Works very well, used a lot less than I expected so cleaned nozzle through with can water, and got half litre of mix left for next time! (I'd even given the Ovlov a coating too!).

The juice clinged well.

Ended up taking 2.5 hrs as decontaminated car too, and clayed windscreen.
