More likely air in the system. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

Cheers mate, means a lot. Am getting a lift to Halfords in the morning to get the fluid and bleed kit. I am always a have-a-go kinda guy (that means having a go at things when they don’t work the way they should) and I can’t remember ever failing to complete something that should be as simple as brakes, simply because I prepare as much as possible. Just missed the mark this time.

Yes opening the caliper will have allowed air in the system.
No big deal and easy to sort out.

So, today I set about trying to Un-screw the CLS brakes. Got fluid and bleed kits, went through the process, to no avail, brakes still slowly going to the floor despite actually seeing the air bleed out…
…then I detected a leak. May have been coming from between the pads or the bleed nipple however I tightened the two bolts on the back of the caliper about a 1/4 turn, as far as I dare force it. Bled the RHS 2 more times, both times seeing air and bubbles so it did make a difference, there was a little seepage from the bleed nipple so perhaps it is just coming from there…however the brakes still felt almost as spongy as before… then I remembered that there is some measure of active brake adjustment on this model where it sharpens or softens the brakes in certain situations. Buttoned everything back up and rolled it backward and forwards in the drive, and it stopped! (Now o can drive it to an indie Woop) I took it for a shot drive and the brakes worked fine but the travel was faaaaar more than before, so there is either still a leak or air in the system (I have not yet bled the rest of the corners as there’s not much point of the indie has to take it all apart) or the thinner DOT 5.1 brake fluid changes the braking character.
I think I remember Wighty posted some time back about trying 5.1 and someone on the thread piped up saying they tried 5.1 but swapped back to 4 Plus Type 200 as they didn’t like the brake pedal travel. Perhaps it is just that, but it does feel different, important part is the car stops. Off to the indie in Colindale first thing in the morning (on the same road as Mercedes Edgware Road so I can get parts easily) , hopefully his bag of tricks can remove the stuck pin, may get him to swap to the official brake fluid type too.

Left early to avoid fuel protesters - not a bad run from 03:30…

So, driving after bleeding the brakes and filling with DOT 5.1, glad it worked however I have to admit, I am not a fan of the different brake feel that the 5.1 gave the pedal. Indie this morning managed to release the pin (that I couldn’t remove after 2h of trying) in 3 mins. He took the same pin tap tool I had and ran it over the grinder/sander to hone the tip and took 1 tap at it with the hammer before it popped. I guess it is possible the WD40 I sprayed in there, with a couple of brake heat cycles, released it a little, but his technique was obviously superior. He bled the brakes after replacing with DOT 4, and the brake feel is more akin to what I am used to. I have to remind myself that the pads were so thin the braking I was used to would have been more ALL/Nothing, but they defo feel different and more familiar with DOT 4. Glad that saga is over, I just need to drive the next 400 miles or so with gentle braking… arguably the most difficult feat yet. So happy this is resolved!

In other news, I had to commiserate and congratulate a colleague today who traded in his failing Mercedes powered Jeep for a 2016 CLS 350 shooting brake, a pretty awesome example at that. Happy that he has stepped into the ring but given the recent strife he has been through to keep the Jeep alive, I can’t help but feel we have all been there trying to sustain the devil we know.
