Hi All,

I am trying to work out if my car is using excessive fuel. I have a CL500 AMG Coupe 5 Litre V8 and I am using Shell V Power. What kind of MPG should be getting in built up areas like City of London and what kind of MPG should I be getting in Motorways?

Thanks.

What CL500 are we talking about, do you not have a hand book as all the info will be in there.

Yes, I do have a handbook. I wasn't sure how accurate it was, I always find manufacturers tend to exagarate things so I wanted to see what others were getting. I have limited knowledge, but how many different types of CL500's are there?

like I said before it depends on the year of CL500, if its the 215 then its a 5.5 V8 where as the W140 was a 5.0 V8 and on good run close to 30mpg, but thrash the knackers out of it and expect to see 8-9mpg, if its the 215 then it has less bhp than the W140 and emissions are stricter so expect about the same figure.
Does yours have a compressor ?

Must be a technical term.

Actually, wasn't the C215 CL500 a 5 litre? I thought it was only the newer CL and the CL55 that were 5.5 litres.

Correct Helen. My 500 did 28 - 30 on the motorway at a steady 70ish. Average with some town bimbling was about 18. 13 when sat in traffic.

Could possibly be a 5.0 and not a 5.5 I havent checked, I assumed the 5.0 was a 5.5 to compensate for the restrictions to get the BHP up a little, afterall the 215 CL500 has less than my CL500.

Not been on this forum for a while but i had a 2002 CL500 which looks like what you have and i retuned around 22 - 24 MPG on average. Its the town driving that really brings it down but on a run i thought it was really good.

I had an S500 coupe and the figures were like the above for the W140/C140 series.

In London, I am getting around 7mpg and 13mpg if I drive carefully but that is a 5.4 litre V12 750il

:p

So practical for one person!

I have just done a 450 mile journey and my E55 only managed 24.3mpg overall. Yes, a few overtakings but mainly at a steady 80 with cruise.

Even at 60 I was getting the same!

Saying that, car needs wheel balancing at the front. Perhaps it will improve once done?!

I've just done 328 miles since the last fill up and the trip computer said 41.5mpg and in reality it is 39.5mpg

My elderly SL 500 has averaged 23.6 in all the time I have had it, but then I get 40,000 per set of brake pads - just smooth I guess? ;);)

Driving or talking?

Very true! I gave up a nice & very very economical diesel for my gas guzzler. Must be mad!

But I enjoy every minute of it..... diesel is never going to be the same as petrol!
