I just figured out my mpg and wondered how I was doing in comparison to others. I have averaged at 28.24 mpg the last few days and this has been mostly motorway or at least above 60moh driving. Thrown in to the equasion has been stuck in traffic for an estimate of say 20-30 mins crawling along at snails pace ( about 10-20 mph ) and 30 - 40 mph roads leading to whichever motorway I was joining.

I have a 96 c280 sport is this about average would you think? I'm not too concerned as my company is paying for my fuel anyway :D

IMHO you need to measure over a longer length of time/mileage to get an accurate reading. 90,000 miles seems about right ;). Coincidentally my E320cdi has averaged 36.5mpg over that amount of miles :D :D

Sounds ok to me.
As I've commented before, MPG is so drastically govered by traffic and driving style, you could get 29 and I could swap cars and complain that your car only does 25.
Our C220 does mid 20's round town and 33 on a run so 28 for a 2.8 6 pot sounds ok to me.

For petrol, it also depends on whether you put premium or super in.

I've had up to 42mpg out of my C200K on long motorway trips on super. But most journeys are either hit more traffic or are more hurried.

Be happy, I'm living in dublin, work all over the city I'm getting since I bought the car (5 months ago) a paltry 13mpg on the clock (did hit 31mpg on the motorway once).

€85 to fill the tank (once a week and that's not even touching the reserve)

Over the course of one fill up, I average about 35 at Motorway speeds, on local nipping about journeys I just watch the needle dropping with every metre I travel!!!

Have noticed a marked increase in "economy" (ha ha) since I've been using BP Ultimate, used to fill up at local Asda thinking that petrol is petrol.....but I have to admit I was wrong!!!

why buy a merc and then worry about MPG, there not known for economy are they ? I drive a C320 V6 and get 20mpg normally, something I did take into consideration when I bought it, but it's sure worth it ( so far )
