Could someone be kind enough to advise me as to what an "HGS" control unit does in my car? Have a silver box the shape/size of the MAS sitting between the MAS and the OVP behind the battery with 'HGS' written on the top. Had the car in a 'Merc specialist' garage last week and they'd never seen one before. Also cannot find any reference as to its function in any manual. Has a Bosch part numb: 008 545 66 32.

Brilliant - thanks for the reply.

If it's such a common component though, I'm a bit surprised the garage hadn't seen one before. Are they normally located somewhere else or is this unit maybe something particular to my model (124.061).

Cheers,
Neil

I've been reading your posts and intruiged by both your username and your surprisingly good knowledge of parts.

Can you enlighten us, is your username a part # if so what is it?

Also, am I right in thinking you work with MB's for a living?

haha!

its seems ive been rumbled.

The 114 072 refers to one of my favorite models, the 280ce early 70's vintage.

I have worked in a mb dealer parts dept straight from school in 1986 covering mb trucks, vans & cars.

I thought i would have a nose a round these forums as it all is quite interesting.
Most people seem to slate the main dealers, I wonder if all main dealers (ie bmw, audi etc) get the same type of hammering ?

re the control unit

I remember it was definately an option at the time on the 3.0 litre coupe you could have the 5 speed auto over the standard 4. This may well have been applicable to the 320 as well.
Far more were 4 speed than 5 so possible the 4 speed control unit was fitted somewhere else?
