Hi all,

Just a quick query...

Whats is the standard period of warranty on a MB. I thought it was 3 years?

The reason I ask is that we bought our motor in 2001 and after a recent holiday in Japan for just over 3 weeks the car barely started on our return.

This made the engine management light come on and stay on even though the manual says it should go off after a few starts.

Took the car to my MB Dealer, Mercedes Benz Macclesfield and they said the engine management needed re setting. This was done and now they've invoiced me for £44!

Is this covered under the warranty?

Also if it happens again, it might, as we'll be doing the same trip again in November then is there a way around this as it seems stupid that if the battery is nearly flat the engine management light comes and stays on.

My Toyota Crown, Jap version of Lexus LS430 needed jump starting and the engine management and computer on that are far more complex than the MB and I didnt have to get that reset!

Just seems daft really.

So can I steam into my MB dealer for trying to charge me for this or is it under warranty?

Cheers Mike

ps. Its good that have a rant now and again :)

Hmm difficult one this...
If Mobilo life couldn't sort you out, then I don't think the stealership can ask you to pay for resetting the light on it, cos due to the battery flattening, by no fault of your own (i.e. lights being left on), it did it by itself cos of the car.

I don;t know if that counts as a manufacturing defect, a stated on their website:
3. Warranty repairs
mobilo-life covers you for four years in the rare event of warranty or goodwill repairs. If the repair work takes longer than two working hours, your Mercedes-Benz Retailer will provide you with another means of transport.

No joy with my local dealer

Have had no joy with my local dealer today.

Their stance is that because there is no fault with the car, the resetting of the engine management because of a flat battery is chargeable, if you pardon the pun!

I say that this is a major computer programming defect, bad design or fault management if you like. I have never know this happen on any other car and I've had loads in my time. After all I could have bought another battery for £44.06!

The dealer also said that if this was left and another problem should arise then this would not be covered under warranty as I wouldnt have had the car checked when the fault arose. So basically get it done otherwise!

This seems like blatant profiteering to me.

£44.06 aint a lot of cash but sometimes this car doesnt get used for weeks on end, if my wife is in Japan (she's Japanese) then this can be upto 6 weeks at a time.

If I have to pay £44.06 then MB can kiss my backside and I'll get something else. Its frustrating to say the least.

Basically MB are charging me if I dont use my car!

I'll try head office and see what happens there. Not holding my breath though!

This re-programming of engine management systems because of a flat battery is unnecessary manufacturing and/or dealer problems they all seem to revel in. Peugeot were reported with similar problems. If the car won't run properly after the battery has been disconnected for an hour (preferably overnight!) in the showroom, then don't buy it whatever make it is. Then fit a battery master switch with a lightly fused by-pass to your radio for your pre-set stations, but not the radio itself, so you can leave the car for long periods.

As for M-B warranty? 1 year or three makes no difference. In my case they did nothing at 6 months and I'm still awaiting several parts after 3 years. OK so I gave up and did it/bought parts myself elsewhere. That saved M-B a bit but 100% lost them a third sale to me. I backed out. The
new "enlightened" "world-player" form of M-B service is...well, enlightened, though there are dealers who try hard in spite of M-B intransigence.

As for "customer service". You may think it sits in UK. The UK phone number gets put through to Holland (!!!). Shades of the British Leyland Green-house tactics. You'll be very lucky to get a reply in a month or any logical reply at all. Plenty of PR B/S, yes. Good luck.

Darned right you are .... get another make. Toyota/Nissan do not need a warranty because nothing goes wrong.

There now, it's so nice to sound off!

I have spoken to two people at MB customer helpdesk, One sounded English and the other on American.

Plus the number I was given was a 00800 number.

All I can add is I dont really care where there customer support is but more about does my problem get sorted!

I have a Honda Goldwing which gets stored in my garage every winter so i connect a battery charger called oximiser made by a company called oxford it automatically assesses your battery it puts a very small trickel charge to your battery and will not over charge it,i leave it conected for around 6 months and keeps the battery in good condition,
You can buy the charger from any good motorcycle dealers. The charger is for all lead acid 12v batterys.
Hope this helps

Northwest Tech:

While saying I was wrong, (agreed, at some hours). On M-B

bureaucracy and its basic intransigence:

I think you confirmed my point!

Many Thanks :D
