My car is a 2000, E series elegance estate with the V6, 2.6l engine. I have been advised to have the Engine Management Unit checked because of lumpy tick over and poor acceleration. See earlier request for help. Where is it, how is it removed?

So far I have identified the large black box at the rear of the engine bay on the near side. Having removed the cover there are 3 electronic cards with top connectors. The two most rear ones are the largest but I cannot see any retaining screws but they appear to be held in securely. Are either of these the EMU and how does one remove them. Thanks.

Firstly, be careful!

...there are a lot of bad repair companies out there, that rip you off on ECU's. Do a scan of the forum to find out which ones. Theres a guy on this forum, ALAN@AIDS_CLINIC (or something like that  ) who repairs ECU's, so worth giving him a buzz.

Are you sure its the ECU, have you tried the simple things of cleaning the MAF (Mass AirFlow Sensor) or replacing it (see sticky post top of this section). Also, spark plug gap settings, injectors cleaned?

The ECU just unplugs, on mine there was 3 connectors, pull forward on the cross-over bracket so that it goes from the top of the connector to the side and they lift out (they actually lift up as you are moving the bracket). Youll also find the ESP computer in the same plastic bin, not sure of the third. It is actually labelled as to its function (ie. it says ECU or ESP).
