Electric engine water pumps have been around for a while. I suspect the OP's water pump is an auxiliary water pump for the heater when parked up or an electric pump to circulate coolant for a set time after the engine is switched off to prevent localised over heating.Wow. An electrically operated water pump for the engine.
What a wonderful fuel/emissions efficiency design.

Saving 2 ltre a Yr. And complicating everything. They will be disengaging drive on downslopes next.Electric engine water pumps have been around for a while. And while not technically electric, the water pump on EmilysMums Citroen doesn't get driven all the time .... a motor moves a pulley to drive the water pump when required (I believe its a BMW engine ??)
Coincidentally .... the original water pump on EmilysMum's C3 was plastic. Needless to say it leaked. The new OE replacement was ally ....Made of plastic.. Tells me all.
