Wow. An electrically operated water pump for the engine.
What a wonderful fuel/emissions efficiency design.
Electric engine water pumps have been around for a while. I suspect the OP's water pump is an auxiliary water pump for the heater when parked up or an electric pump to circulate coolant for a set time after the engine is switched off to prevent localised over heating.
And while not technically electric, the water pump on EmilysMums Citroen doesn't get driven all the time .... a motor moves a pulley to drive the water pump when required (I believe its a BMW engine ??)

Saving 2 ltre a Yr. And complicating everything. They will be disengaging drive on downslopes next.

I assume it’s the OM651 - did the garage replace with a genuine MB part if not aftermarket are known to be troublesome?

Coincidentally .... the original water pump on EmilysMum's C3 was plastic. Needless to say it leaked. The new OE replacement was ally ....

If the part shown by malcolm is what is on the OPs car, there are no electrical connections. In which case if you have an open circuit fault, changing the pump won't fix that. It shows as vacuum controlled, in which case there must be an EVRV (electronic vacuum regulating valve) somewhere. An open circuit fault for that would make sense.

First job for OP identify what's fitted.

P2600 is specified in ISO15031 2005 as Coolant Pump Control Circuit/Open, it is not manufacturer dependent.
A W212 should be complying to the specs, so code reader won't matter.
