hi there,

new to the forum, but thought i'd start with a fact finding exercise.

just wondering which C class (or any other classes for that matter) and which sprinter vans use common rail diesel? I'm trying to stay away from common rail for veg oil running purposes and was wondering what year they came in on.

Have searched the forum high and low, and can only work out so far that CDi seems to signify common rail, other than that...

cheers

Rick

Hi & Welcome,

The 220cdi, 270cdi and 320cdi came in around 2000. Prior to that the 250D & TD as well as 300D & TD all non high pressure common rail. The CDI badge really is the giveaway as the 250TD engine lasted past yr 2000.
There is some useful infomation here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mercedes-Benz_engines

The first sprinters from 95 to around 99/00 were the pre CDI engines so you would be looking for a 310 or 312 (probably best to avoid the 308 as it is quite low on power). Anything badged 311/313/316 is a CDI common rail engine although the 308 carried on to the common rail era so to be sure also look out for the later more curvy headlights and the gear shift moved from the floor to the dashboard with the CDI introduction.

A note of caution, commercial vehicles are likely to be stopped by the Ministry men and they often check fuel content at these roadside checks so make sure you register with customs and excise and pay the necessary fees for running with veg oil as a road fuel and avoid any bother.
