Parts of my engine are looking a little tatty due to spray from salted roads etc and I'd like to give it a superficial clean with a soft brush and watering can - any recommendations about what products are best for the job?

Does Halfords stock anything decent?

Muck Off! Sorry, I'll rephrase that - I recommend a product called Muck Off!. I've commented on it before for wheel cleaning and i've used it very successfully on a dealer kept engine bay (s**tty) on the 'E'. I've found gunk too greasy, which gets dirty too quickly. Muck Off is non solvent/non acidic base and does not attract dirt afterwards.

Autoglym, they engine cleaner is excellent, I've tried cheaper cleaners but they stain your drive and leave a residue on your engine. Let the engine dry and then spray with Silkolene Pro Prep, its a fine silicone spray that really makes you metalwork and plastic look like new (It's like 'back to black' but less greasy) I used to use it on my MX bikes after jetwashing and it brings them up like new.

Check out http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/ they have a special on Muc Off at the moment. They are a motorcycle accessories shop but they don't mind 4 wheels.
You can also get Purple Helmet Polish whilst buying your Muc Off from Busters.:p
