Which W204 Engine?

Hi there,

I'm thinking of purchasing a W204, downsizing from a W221 320CDI (no longer need such a large car). My annual mileage is 10,000 per year. Thinking of perhaps going for a petrol, used to have a c180K w203 which was very smooth but a little sluggish off the mark.

What is the general opinion on the w204 c180 (2011 MY)?

Would be grateful for any thoughts especially regarding which engine is generally favoured. What is reliability like of the w204. Finally, the 7g on my w221 especially when cold can be harsh on downshift. Does the W204 have an updated smoother version of the 7g.

Many thanks

Get a 5g 204 C220cdi pre be. No harsh changes, nice proven engine. Pre 2011 but so strong and reliable.

Or get a new C250 petrol with 7g plus. More power than a C180 which will be gutless.

agree with Steve the 220cdi is a fine car pre BE, and to be fair a good car after, once they sorted out a few injection issues. My Brother just swapped his 59 plate C220 cdi Blue Efficiency after 98,000 miles for a *** 320d!!!
but, merc was faultless apart from the injector change in 2010. The car never let him down they were replaced under warranty when the injector issue arose.

depends how much you got to spend. The new c-class are a delight and the 7g is much improved. The original pre-facelift W204 C class are a fine car I can testify to that. Had mine 3 years and on 62k and not one fault. Still a delight to drive and great MPG.
at 10k would go for c220 for better performance even tho the 10k PA miles is a border line case for petrol v diesel.

In terms budget £18k would be ideal but could go to about £20k if needed.

Looking at the engines, the c180 appears to be a 1.6 turbo, which makes me a little nervous the car may be underpowered.

For my budget I could either get a c180 post facelift or for around 20k I could get a pre-facelift c250cgi.

Which do you think is the longer term bet, I would like to keep this car for a good 5-7 years at least - c250cgi pre-facelift vs c180cgi post facelift

Thanks

C250 CGI Estate
C180CGI and C250CGI have identical engine capacities 1796cc achieving 156bhp and 204bhp.

I have a 2011 pre-facelift 5 speed auto C250CGI sport estate purchased via Mercedes retail used. Overall experience so far has been very good, engine is super smooth and powerful enough for day to day use, fuel consumption has averaged 35mpg over 9k miles of mixed journeys treated gently it will do 40mpg on a long journey.

I have spotted a 2010 C180cgi sport estate on their website with 30k miles + command media system fitted for £17290. The warranty offered is exactly the same as you would get from a franchised dealer.

Post facelift cars have lots of improvements most notable being the revised dashboard. However MB has already revised the facelift car so even if you purchased one it would still not be the current model.

At your budget you can get a good pre-facelift C220cdi with toys and change! Last March I bought a July 2008 C220Cdi elegance estate with leather, Comand, heated lumbar seats, phone pre-wire, ipod pre-wire, electric tailgate, pre-safe etc. 1 owner, 60k miles, full MB service history (and was given its 4 year B service prior to delivery to me), bought from MB Ashford so 12 months tier 1 MB warranty - £15498!
