I tried getting input on this from a w163 specific forum, but I got no real takers. So anyway here goes...

My 722.6 transmission in my W163 ML270 runs perfectly but it makes a horrible whine sound when on overrun in 2nd gear. It is far worse when engine/trans is cold, but it is still there when hot too. I can hear it inside the cabin with windows shut when cold, have to have window open to hear it when hot.

It is an expensive sounding noise, it kind of sounds like a big electric motor sort of whine sound. I have heard that same sound from other auto transmissions in many different cars when holding them in lower gears on overrun, just not as loud as mine. Trouble is the ML likes to automatically hold on to lower gears when going down hills at urban speeds, so it is constantly reminding me, and to be honest it is driving me nuts.

So does ayone have any advice/input, I have recently changed 4l of fluid (of about 8l total) and filter (with genuine MB parts), but no change to the sound, oh, and its done 145k miles, with an unconfirmed filter and fluid change about 20k miles ago by the previous owner too. The fluid I changed was dark brown but not burnt or full of metal.

I do have a recurring P2600 stored fault in the EGS system using carsoft, never get the error live, so I assume it is happening during cranking. I beleive that fault is to do with the main power supply to the EGS controller (transmission ECU). I don't know if this is related to the whine, but who knows?

Could it not be a diff?
Thanks guys, no, it is definately the transmission, and only on second gear on overrun. I know how much time can be wasted helping people on forums with issues like this, only to find out it was for example the CD player making the noise! So I do appreciate your input, but I just wanted to make that clear.

So I know what a diff whine sounds like, and this is quite a different sound. It sounds just like a big electric motor winding up. It is a much harsher sound than a smooth diff whine sound. Please bear with me... a diff is more of a wwwwoooooooooooo sound, whereas this is more of a rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound.

I can be coasting down a hill silently in 3rd, then select 2nd, and you can hear the noise winding-up and then remaining in sync with 2nd gear engine/road speed, then down to 1st and it is gone again.

Hi, Couldn't possibly be a transmission mounting shot could it. Or even an engine one. Engines and boxes can give some strange noises when mountings are not right.

Thanks yes anything is possible. But if it was that then it should be there when in the other gears too. Probably even worse when chopping down into 1st gear.

If you could hear it you would be 100% sure it was from the transmission. The sound is almost as if 2nd gear has been replaced internally with an old electric motor from a washing machine. All the other gears are perfectly silent, its only second gear and only on overrun.

ps. My RHS engine mount does need replacing, but that is causing the classic symptoms for one of these... a harsh vibration at 1800rpm on strong takeoff.

Just a minor update...

I had a mechanic service the car today (I have to for my aftermarket warranty). After a road test he agrees that the noise is definately from the transmission and only in 2nd gear. He said to contact MB and see if there is a known issue (yeah... right), and/or see an auto trans specialist for an opinion. So that is what I shall do.

As an amusing/coincideantal aside... When I was outside today, I heard a car go past making a terrible, and yet strangely familiar sound. I looked up instantly, while subconsiously thinking "that sounds bad/expensive" and guess what I saw... an ML driving past, slowing down for the speed bump outside our house, presumably in second gear.

So any other ML owners care to chime in here with your own 2nd gear on overrun noises/opinions?

Hi there,

Tell I'm way off, but my old C class did much the same. It was the bearing in the middle of the propshaft which was allowing the shaft to flex on the over run.
