Hi all,

I've got a W210 E300TD with 101K. When the engine has FULLY warmed up,
there's a whining noise (like a hover mower) between 1300 and 1500 rpm
and a noticable vibration by the front passenger feet area.

The noise is there when the car is stationary and when on the move.

I've had the front belt, tensioner etc replace but no joy.

I've more or less had it with the car.

SO HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!

have a look to see if its things like exhaust mounting and supports or maybe even and engine mounting. If you can put it over a pit and have a look when someone else revs the car, it will help to see where the problem is coming from

I know its frustrating but I feel bound to let you know that thats not all that bad a problem (yet anyway)!

I think the mechanic (ex Merc technician) has checed the engine mounting
and the exhaust bits although he did say it seemed to stop it a few times but
never all the time.

One thing I forgot the mention, the noise is louder inside the car than outside it.

The only way to get to the bottom of this is to have someone sit in the car with their foot on the throttle so that the noise/vibration is happening and for the other person to go underneath and have a good look/listen to see where the issue is.

Vibration noises - where something like an exhaust is hitting off part of the body can often be noisier inside than out, so you will need to bear that in mind.

There are numerous heat shields shrouding the exhaust and any of them could be rattling too. Not to mention any of the stuff thats bolted to the body around the back of the engine.

Finally if the exhaust got a thump or if one of the support mountings at the back is broken the back box may be rubbing off the body (although you would probably know that this is coming from the back).

Noises in cars are a pain and can be deceiving. Through hard experience I now get someone to replicate the noise that I usually hear when driving while I sit in the passengers front seat or in the back - I've been caught out a few times!

hope you get it sorted and let us know how you get on,

Fran

Thanks Fran for the moral support.

We tried all the above.

However, we thought we'll have a try again and bingo !

The exhaust, heat shields etc were fine. The culprit was the rubber grommits
holding the AC pipes underneath the washer bottle.
