When come to a stop in my E320CDI there is a 'whirring noise' from the engine which lasts approx 5-10 seconds. I also think I've detected it when in motion. Could anyone please advise me what it is? presumably it's an engine function which is meant to happen? Never heard it on my E240 though. Someone told me it was the diesel engine cleaning it's own filter by injecting fuel into it but I'm not sure what they meant by this.

I think the noise is from the pump that circulates water through the heater

I do not know what year your car is, but if you have sensonic brakes, then the do make a noise that can last around 10 sec.

I have this on my van and also detected it whilst running. I complained about this getting noisier and sometimes sounding laboured and an electric pump in the coolant system was replaced under warranty. I still hear it when the engine is turned off. I also get a higher pitched motor type noise from near the turbo which I guess runs on for about a minute after shutdown and I have assumed it is a system to feed oil to the turbo after shutdown but I have never been sure. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Going back to the first pump, I have just remembered what it is for. If I press the REST button while the engine/ingnition is switched off the heater fans will blow for approx 30 minutes and extract heat from the engine by ciculating the coolant electronically, hence the pump. No one at Merc knew why it was running at other times! but there you go

Long shot! If the vehicle is fitted with COMAND, then this can make some really weird noises for quite some time after switching off. Even with the keys removed.

MB say that this is quite normal and can last as long as 30 mins.

You can say that again, on mine the fan starts and stops,it clicks and clonks, then goes quiet as you say for a good ½hour.

I spoke to the dealers today. They reckon it's the brakes.Apparently the braking circuit 're-initialises' after operation and this is the sound. Maybe the car (04 reg) has the sensonic brakes Malcolm refers to in his response?

Top marks to Malcolm for getting this correct if thats the case.

My '54' reg C220cdi makes the same sort of noise. It lasts for about 5-10 seconds after switching off.

Also I notice that it does it if I simply open a door (ignition not on). The dash display shows milage etc. and this sound runs for about 5 sec. If I sit in the car and do not put the ignition key in the dash display goes out and the sound stops. If the ignition key is put in and turned to position one the sound continues until I switch off then it stops after about 5 sec.

I've always assumed its normal and everything on the car works OK.

I think the sensonic brakes do need to keep charging up, when I have had the consumer battery off for a few hours the brake pedal sinks quite low. Like your cars mine will do it when a door is opened.Nice to be normal sometimes.

The days when your car went to sleep when you removed the key are long gone!
Even just opening the door seems to trigger all sorts of whirrs and clicks from under the bonnet and behind the dash. SBC as well as various electronic stuff fire up, self test, shut down again.
Nothing to worry about.

So true, have you got two batteries on your E car, when I got my new toy, I made up my bed in the garage, but no way could I sleep with the noises,so iwent in the house to sleep. My first thought was Oh water in the electrics driving home, seconds thoughts, this is why he sold it.

Noticed this pump was struggling again today :( popped under bonnet with metal object and applied a technical thwack!!! motor raced away and so far sounds fine. It's amazing how cheap a non-warranty repair can be
