Hi Guys,
I'm new here, but interested to know why you all bought MB's. My reason is that recently I wrote of my Alfa Romeo, and was paid out by my insurance company.I looked around ages for a replacement car, and the best I could find (by a long, long way ) was a 1991 W201 190E 2.0Auto.
I'd always fancied an MB, and this was my chance to own one: a chance which I seized, as the said car was such a fine example. Since then I've never looked backed. I'm very impressed by the build quality and driver appeal of the car, and can see myself owning more MB's in the future.

What's your reason?

Mark.

Because my godfather warned me off second-hand BMWs!

To tell you the truth, I wasn't even in the market for one when I ran into a charming friend-of-a-friend, who was trying to get shot of the 280SE she'd received from the estate of an acquaintance. I think she was more grateful to get back the space in her garden than to receive the money! As a result it was a total bargain; in fact a lot cheaper than the VW Golf I'd been looking at. Petrol down here is a lot cheaper, too - I've worked out the Benz is a hair cheaper to run than my Escort 1.6 was in the UK.

Plus, as the old girl put it, "A young man must have something to impress the ladies!"

It was time to replace my ageing E30 318iS BMW.

An E36 BMW 3 series was my initail thought, but are far too common IMHO. Having always liked the looks of the W202 C Class, when one turned up at my preferred independant dealer I took it.

It was a C200 which lasted me a year, until the same thing happened again with a C230K.

I needed to replace my Volvo V40 2.0 Sport and wanted something faster, more economical and with better residual value. Whilst I wanted a Subaru Impreza Turbo the £800 insurance and 23mpg put me off (and my wife thinks they're too ugly).

The 220 came up in a local indepandant in Chobham, and the deal was done!

Just over a year later I can safely say it was a good decision!

why I chose a Merc

the reason i chose a merc is :
as a kid my mom had a xj6-gr8 car but her sister had a 280s-3.5 which was so more handsome and older yet after 10 years still looked the part, wheras Moms XJ's (6 and 2x12) both used to look so tatty after a few years.
In 1979 my Mom got a W123 280e in horrible Tobacco with boring beige cloth yet it still cut a dash when she picked me up at end of term -and i learnt to drive in that car
10 years ago I was driving my Golf GTI along Cromwell Road(A4) out of town on a Friday afternoon when I saw my cousin in his 230E(1990-model) and i thought "what a boring sedan" but as we crept along side each other out of London I began to appreciate the TUETONIC styling and thought of my Aunt Mary's elderly 280s 3.5 and another relative's 1969 sedan and realised I was driving a Eurobox that would outdate in 5 years but a MERC would stay looking Aloof for years
The seats are comfy
The car is solid
it may not be a drivers machine like a BMW or a Jaguar but will outlast most cars, and look smart for years to come except cars such as Bentleys and Morgans that also keep their KUDOS
well that was my reason!

The reason I choose a Mercedes, because:

1 I like it build quality, strong, safe, design to last forever!!!! so I could possibly live longer!!

2 The engineering design of it, is not engineering, is art! if u try to solve out some small problem or service the car by yourself, u could notice it, the design is totally different from other manufacturer.... :D

3 Status!! is a Mercedes!!!! 8)

hehe
oh yeah the the climatic ctrl & leather seats came in handy too :D

Got mine because I frightened myself on my bike (a Honda ST1100 Pan-European for those that are interested) which I used all year round.

Pulling onto a roundabout quickly, in rush hour, and having the back wheel kick out when the wheel spun brought me to my senses!

Didn't drop it but it made me think of my kids.

From 50mpg to less than 25mpg but hey! It is a Mercedes and I love it (even if it is a 4-matic - ****** good in the snow we had BTW).

It was cheap at £1800 but looks the dogs dangly bits!

Hi!

One of my lifetime ambitions was to own a Mercedes. I am in my mid thirties now, married and two small kids.

I have had loads of small cars starting with Citroen 2CVs (still in love with them!), other mad Citroens, 4 Daihatsu Charade GTti's (astonishing cars), 2 Cinquecento Sportings (huge fun).

I spent £2000 restoring a Charade GTti and had it for two years until it went bang! Despite being looked after! In desperation for transport we bought an 89 VW Passat. Burgundy with beige interior! We never got shot of it despite its hideous looks and bodily state. I liked it, especially the space, which we really got used to with two kids who came along!

We thought the time had come to get something more attractive and thought about another Passat but maybe a 2.0GL or a GT 16v. All the time though a voice was saying to me it was time to get your Mercedes. So we did!

With all the specialist servicing and parts available now it made sense. I hope reality lives up to my dreams!

I didn't have much of a choice with my 1990 190E auto

In-laws were trading it in against a new W202 at the same garage they bought it from 5 years previous and the Father in law had purchased his brand new SLK from 2 years previous.
Car had full MBSH and had just been serviced at said garage to a tune of £900(exhaust) and the salesman offered bottom book for it.
3 yrs ago car had 78,000mls, full electrics,alloys,met paint,etc and he offered £2000 against a £21,000 car
So being my father in law he said that if he was going to get next to nothing for it, He might as well give it to somebody who would appreciate it.
I was looking for a car, so could I really turn it down?
I didn't know the first thing about the car but that doesn't matter in these cases

It has been the best car I have ever owned and despite being 13yrs old it still impresses people

Infact when we go out with other people and I take the Merc the always say "we're going in style tonight" even though they have just blown £13,000 plus on a new vauxh**l

Go figure!!

I wanted a toy for the weekend as I have a company car for all the dirty work. So I had a look at a few late 80s Jags and was dissapionted with the build quailty.
I bought a blue 1987 560SEC with 98000 miles on the clock, it was a great car and a lot of my friends thoght it cost about £15k not the £6k I paid for it. It did 12 miles to the gallon around town and upto 19 on a run but I enjoyed every mile
The only reason I changed this car was that while looking for a Saab for a friend I came across a 190e Brabus 3.6 24v which I just had to buy.

Why I bought a Mercedes

Never really thought I would buy one. Began looking for a 90's model BMW 525 and came across a 1990 300 CE. Wow ... there was no looking back. This car is 13 years old, yet the design and performance rival anything on the market today. Am looking forward to some head gasket repairs, and probably new brakes...but the overall quality of the car justifies the repairs. My only regret is that Mercedes dealerships are not more accomodating. The two in my area are not helpful to those of us who cannot afford a new one. Too bad ... because I think owners of older Mercs are probably some of their strongest supporters. Good luck with the car .... you're gonna love it! :!:

used to own an A210
Why I bought a A class Merc

Hi folks,

This is my reason for buying an A-Class.

My wife has a small pottery business and sometimes needs to transport large pots or bags of clay from place to place and the flexibility of the seats and the height inside allows us to shift some pretty huge pots now and again. We've had a 6 foot pot inside with no problem. Nothing else on the market came close for the size of motor, mind you we didn't look all that hard. My wife was smitten with the A-class after the test drive and we didnt want a van. I mean we could have had a Fiat Multipla but come on would you, talk about the ugliest car on the planet!

We're on our second A-Class already, we swopped our A160 for a A140 with air con and are really happy with it.

My only gripe is the windscreen wipers which I though MB would have sorted out by now! Are you listening MB?

cheers for reading

Bought my 1968 220 Automatic as a spur of the moment choice (10 cars in 10 years of driving, no write offs or accidents just spur of the moment choices!). May dad had one when I grew up and I had wanted one since (he sold it just before I started to drive).

So when I saw this one for sale on the net I sold my very fast kit for a more sedate and refined car. Since owning it has appeard on top gear (for about 30 seconds) and is currently being filmed in "The life and death of Peter Sellers" so I havent seen it for a couple of weeks now. :?

E55 AMG
Our first MB was a result of a long standing joke - Every week my other half for as long as I can remember has been telling me she is going to win the lottery and what do I want to spend the money on. Kind of stock reply, a metallic powder blue AMG E55. Last November she won a tenner and as a joke she said lets go get the Merc then :) We had a look through the classifieds and found a 1985 230E W123 (metallic powder blue) with full service history that the guy who was selling had to move quickly - his wife was sick of him having 3 cars on the drive and he'd been let down by a couple of time wasters - we got the car for a great price and he got a quiet life. The car was great providing 5 months of totally reliable service until some idiot decided it would look better after they had redesigned the finish with a key. Our insurance company paid out for the damage (twice what we paid for the car:) - due to it's exceptional condition prior to being vandalised and it's service history). We thougth long and hard about getting it repaired or upgrading, finally deciding on the latter. We bought ourselves another , this time a 1989 W124 230TE with full MB service history but a couple of minor faults and a major one the seller pointed out to us and a price that took these points into consideration - one of the back shock absorbers was leaking - expensive but easy to do and fully justified the extra £500 discount on the car. The other little niggles included a few scratches/marks on the bodywork, a badly repainted front wing and a tyre that needed replacing.

All the mechanical stuff is now sorted, the car has been serviced, tyres replaced and the bodywork will be done next month. Looking at the budget, by the time we have paid for all the bits to be done the car stands us at about £300 - not bad for a car in the sort of overall condition it's in.
