For both cold start and stop/start my W212 engine starts virtually instantly. How is it able to do this when my previous car a Volvo V70 had to have a glow-plug warm up period to start?

A CDI engine doesn't need glow plugs to start, even at sub-zero temperatures. It uses them to help reduce emissions?

Glow plugs are used every time the engine starts, for up to 40sec depending on coolant temperature. Certainly on the W203, W210, W220 not sure about the W212.
