Why is my car 'hopping'?

I have a V-reg Mercedes C240 and it's just started 'hopping' when I slow down (say, at a junction) and then move off. It's fine at all other speeds but if it drops below about 15mph or so it does this funny shunting thing. If it were a manual car it would be happening as I change from 1st to 2nd. Sorry, I am a technical ignoramus.

Sorry, forgot to add my please and thank yous when posting my message. I came across this site quite by accident and it looks interesting and useful. I love my Merc and hope it's going to be OK.

Actually it's fine when I slow down, the problem happens when I pull away (say at a junction) and am, obviously in a low speed. It also happens when I start the engine and move away: as it gathers speed (I can only describe it as going from first to second gear) it gives quite a jolt and then it's OK.

I do have a local Merc specialist repairer but would like to go in this week a bit better informed!

Many thanks.

First thing to do would be to have the gearbox fluid and filter changed, it an electronic box and when cold it will hold onto 2nd as long as possible to warm up the CAT Once its up to temp 80-100c it should be smoother
