Just had a new original merc exhaust fitted on my 350SL and its painted black, although its got a fair few scratches on it showing nice shiny metal underneath. Why are they painted black? Is It just a protective covering to prevent rust during long term storage before sale? Does it burn off with use?

Yes, but having said that the rear box on my 87 230te is rotten but I have a mate that can weld like Ive never seen before so he will be repairing it for me, anyway Ive cleaned it up and the main silencer has 97% of the original black paint on it, maybe its there to stop rust.

Black or silver

I used to think 'black' was chosen because it was a good radiator of heat. However, a large percentage of cheaper exhaust components are not painted. I believe the most likely reason is simply to inhibit rust whilst the components are in storage, prior to sale. The paint often flakes off when in use.
