Hello,

I have a 63 plate CLS Shooting Brake and recently due to a bleeding stone chip on the front windscreen (near the radar system for adaptive lights), a massive crack has now developed on the screen which more than likely will be an MOT fail. My dilemma is should I go through insurance who will provide a ‘non-Mercedes’ replacement or should I go via Mercedes and pay myself for a Mercedes branded replacement? What are the differences between the two if any?

Thanks as always

I’d go via insurance, just make sure it’s all calibrated afterwards

As above, a non OE windscreen will be fine. Just make sure the fitter calibrates the rain sensor when fitting.

I had a new screen fitted in my previous E55 (National Windscreens) and the fitter didn't need to calibrate anything afterwards. Rain sensing wipers still worked fine afterwards.

Just had a non-OEM replacement screen on my GLC and all is good. Autoglass were very professional and did all ADAS recalibration but fitting had to be done at one of their depots.

I would trust Autoglass more than my local dealer.

I booked mine in at Autoglass, fitter called and said 3rd party screen and would calibrate, asked me if I wanted genuine Mercedes. I said if no extra and he offered to call my insurer and ask.

Yesterday said insurer had agreed....

Looks like insurance is the way to go but I will try and see if I can get a genuine Mercedes screen instead.

Thank you to all once again

Thanks for sharing the photos, was it Autoglass that fitted in for you? Been told Pilkington glass is used by insurers when it comes to replacements.

I had 4 windscreens done via insurance on the disAstra gtc and 2 on the E350. IIRC it was Autoglass and National who came out. All sensors and things worked fine. Not sure why modern screens are so fragile and damage so easily as my older stuff has taken much worse impacts and had a chip at worst.

Also my policies have never suffered negatively from repeated windscreen claims on any modern stuff I had.

No. The screen was supplied and fitted by National Windscreens. I went through my insurance as well as I had windscreen cover.

That’s good to hear re negative impact on insurance premium.

Agree re quality of off windscreens, not what it used to be.
