Hi all,

Firstly just want to say what a great forum, there is so much useful info on here!

Right, to my problem on my '89 190E I hope someone can help me with... driving in to work this morning, wiper on intermittent, the rain got heavier so I swiched it to constant, and as I switched it, the arm just stopped without warning halfway across the screen! I was able to move the arm freely back to its normal resting position and its mechanism moves as it should.

When I tried to reset it by stopping & starting the car & switching the wiper on, it shows some willing, moving about an inch, but then stops.

The wiper motor was replaced by the previous owner at the stealership around 6000 miles/18 months ago, so it has not really had the wear & tear you would expect that could lead to failure, and given that there was no warning as seems normal in these instances, and it died immediately on switching to the higher speed, I suspect it could be something more electrical than mechanical?

All suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum,Kris.
As you say your wiper problem sounds electrical , first thing to do is check the fuse, the bullet fuses are notorious for bad and intermittent contact, remove the fuse ,clean the contacts and the holder. Then check the relay, large combination relay in compartment at rear of fuse box; part no.2018210147 ,I think; remove it and clean the pins. Try this and come back, I'll give it some thought.
Cheers, Geo.

Thanks Geo

Will look at when I get home & let you know.. What a start to the week, I took my other car to work instead, and the rear wiper promptly gave up on that too!!

Kris,
If you ask to move this thread to the technical area you may get more response.

I think that by the symptons you describe that the arm has come loose on the spline, and it only requires to be tightened, If it was an electrical fault you would not be able to move the arm.

Kris,
I think Malcolm may be correct, can you hear the motor running even though the wiper arm has stopped moving ?

Hi there thanks for your coments. Yes, the motor is still heard running when I switch the wipers on. I'll get in there & see what's gotten itself loose once the weather sorts itself out...
