Wisps of smoke...

Don't know whether to be concerned. I got to my local garage this morning to drop my 190D 2.5 off for a new battery and alternator. I lifted the bonnett up when I arrived and saw wisps of smoke emerging from the top of the oil cap - yet the engine had hardly warmed up. I questioned the guy who was dealing with my alternator/battery and he muttered something about "seals" and said he would take a look.

Given that the engine was just warming up, this smoking does seem rather odd... Anything to worry about? The engine's done almost 190,000 miles but regularly serviced and even more regular oil changes, between every 3k and 6k since new... Had plenty of love. Still runs fine with 40plus mpg.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Adrian

Could be a blocked breather

Thanks, Ian. What's a blocked breather, and where is it? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm not mechanically minded...

Thanks

There are some rubber hoses going to the rocker cover (thats the thing on the top of your engine) At the lower end of these hoses are filter sort of things. They just need washing out with brake cleaner or parafine. Also in the air cleaner there is a filter. Give that a clean while you are at it.
