Just wondered....Would you pay over the top for car that was in exceptional condition..i.e. usual examples were £15-£18k but was sticking to £20k as it was almost perfect with all the goodies and very low miles...plus full MB Service history...

Yes!
I tend to keep a car a long time so the extra outlay isn’t so important

Same for me as @malcolm210 , my current 212 was about £2k over others but had all the options I wanted (well everything but airmatic) being sold by a forum member who is an Indy it was their person car so very well cared for, as I was keeping it until it no longer runs then I didn’t mine paying over

I paid over the odds for my BMW 435i but it was a 4 year old 1 owner 6k miles car from a franchise probably paid £2k over the odds - 4 years on do I regret it certainly not.

My S212 was high mileage for a 4 year old car but again absolutely immaculate. On viewing it needed a B service and new discs and pads which the dealer declined to do so I added this cost onto what they wanted for the car and went ahead with the purchase - 6 years on would I do the same yes

Personally no. Condition and mileage only ever go one way in normal use. All it does is increase your depreciation.

But then I have a habit of buying cars midlife and running them for ages.

My car came from a MB dealer so I probably paid over the odds .... but it had stuff on it that I wanted.

No...

I paid about £1k less than BCA auction hammer prices for my SLK by getting it from MB Dealer (Derby)

However I would say if you're happy with the price and the car then go for it. There is always another car though and the hunt is always the fun bit - I spent 9 months looking for my first E320 about 6 months looking for my second and about the same time looking for my SLK. Happy to travel anywhere for the right car with the right options (for me)

I would pay extra for a top notch car, yes!
I paid full asking for my CLS because it had every bell and whistle that was important to me whilst most others didn't.

Yes.
I did with my current 209 CLK and in my opinion well worth it. Same with my R170 SLK. In my book condition is everything.

I most certainly would and do. I just couldn’t live with a scabby old $hit heap :)

Defo, yes, if it was a total minter, with extremely low mileage, and had all the options I wanted, then yes, a no brainer for me, obviously not ridiculously overpriced, but certainly 2 to 3 grand over. :)

Yes but so long as the extra is within reason and sensible.

This is due to the fact i usually have a strict base list which not many cars especially with age will be able to meet. On top of that I usually buy something a bit unique to say the least which further adds to a further though list. Lastly as I buy stuff with the intention to keep for life or until someone smashes into it to take it off the road, it needs to be something I’ll be happy to spend many years and miles in.

If I was buying cars to change every 5 years or so then unlikely unless it was a special edition model that I could be sure would warrant an extra.

I normally change cars every 2 to 3 years but I am still prepared to pay a bit over the top for an extra special example. That over payment is not a total loss because as long as it is cared for you should be able to recover some of that money back. :)

At the bottom end of the market, absolutely yes. A really well maintained car for a grand above an average example could save money/aggro almost immediately.

Otherwise I think not because I’m not sure long term ownership is even viable. Fuel prices & emission zones will probably end ICE cars well before their natural lifespan.

A mint condition EV could well be written off by uneconomical battery replacement / electrical gremlins. Also a possibility nobody will touch older EV’s in the future used market due to the tech being obsolete and fear of being lumbered with battery replacement.

Essentially everything could become disposable at this point.
