You cannot have a back up brake lamp/light

I think these units have redundant pairs of filaments - it so the primary has failed and its on the second one.
I could be wrong but I seem to recall seeing something about it somewhere

I am not looking for a backup brake light, the message backup brake light came on intermittently means the brake light bulb need replacement

I am looking for a replacement bulb, MB cant provide me except the whole bulb cluster or they don't want me to handle it in case it explodes

Again you cannot have a back up a brake lamp, either a brake lamp or back up lamp, the 2 things have nothing to do with each other.

I think this is right since all bulbs are the same SAM can control whatever bulb instead of failed one. I got back-up message thought cannot recall which one was blown in first place.

OP could check the connector of the light assembly, plug is pretty frail...

It is the poor buggers that have all LED lamps that have or will have problems, these new LED headlamps can cost £1500

Well this has been an interesting read..
So jaysonyw nearly got flamed at the beginning because he was correct but didnt provide enough information for people to understand what he was trying to describe ! lol.. These things happen !!

Now surely if your getting an intermittent warning about bulb failure then its more likely to be a bad connection somewhere rather than a bulb/lamp not working then working again?

it may or may not be a "just in case". I started opening up the light cluster to find out why the message saying backup brake light, it more than 6 months ago, I cant remember precisely, that why I decided to find out whether I can get a replacement prompted my curiousity. it justifiable as the car is 10 years old

I am sorry, I didn't mean to create a drama, at least it educated some who don't know or aware of it, I am still looking for a replacement, there is still no answer, unless I buy the whole cluster with no bulb in it or £120 which may or may not contain some bulbs

You certainly did create a drama but mostly spurred on by those who should know better.
Not everyone is fully clued up on the outs and innerards of cars or their electronic wizardy, and I'm not just talking about you Jason...

I do not know the prices Jason, you would have to ask mercedes, but the circuit board with the lamps is probably about £30

Jason, if you followed the ebay links I posted some pages ago you will get an idea of prices.
For forums to work you need to read the advice given, read links provided and then make a decision on whether more information is required.
If you don't do these things people rightly get annoyed as it's perceived as not making an effort to help yourself.
Once part numbers are provided it's up to you to verify them with the dealer using your Vin number and then obtain a price.
The people on this forum aren't Mercedes employees, we're just enthusiasts and/or owners of vehicles made by MB.
If you want to complain to MB about how stupid it is then do it yourself but don't expect us to do it, nor phone for part prices etc.

If you want part prices go to inchcape mercedes of Oxfords website and put the part numbers in their online shop. More often than not you'll get a guide price from there and can even order it.

I thought you going to say £1000, with reference to the LED headlamp
