It could be OK for years, I do not think that mine is altered.

I figured it wouldn't be much of an issue, the drain pipe is pretty wide.

Did a small mod today to the grille on the air box intake. Where i live we have a lot of tree's dropping seeds which would fall straight into the air box and likely would eventually block the water drain so i bought a sheet of 2mm square plastic netting which i cut to shape and placed over the grille. Time will tell if it stays in place and works, the netting doesn't restrict air flow so hopefully i have a cheap fix to the blocked drain issue.

That sounds like a great idea. We have the same problem in our front garden. Do you have any pics of your mod?

Cheers

Have you checked for damp under your carpet. If water is in the box it will be under the carpet unfortunately.

I think the "overflow" from box to inside the car is high up the box so Flowrider should be OK (I note that is the case).

I have not done the modification but I check the drains whenever I wash the car (I use copious amounts of water directed at the drains) and so far I have not had to clear the drains.......my car is garaged.

A drain is a drain and can be cleared like any other drain but avoiding blocked drains will save a lot of aggravation.

I note that Flowrider went in from the outflow which probably works best; the inflow is easily accessed with the bonnet in the vertical position and the box cover off........drain hole is nearest the wing.

No pic's sorry, but it is simply a matter of cutting the plastic mesh the same shape as the grille that is clipped to the air box. I have been out in the SL today and so far the mesh has stayed in place. I bought the mesh from ebay.

I would have cleared the drain from the airbox end but i couldn't locate it. The flexible net curtain rail works well for clearing drains.

Noticed a little issue today with the outside temp display in the instrument cluster, i de-iced the SL this morning so the temp was very low but the reading in the car said 12.5 degrees C! On the drive today the temp went up to 14 degrees and only dropped to 11 degrees all day, i know that can't be right.

If you mean with the engine running then yes. I drove about 40 miles today and the temp reading never went below 11 degrees C.

If the engine temp gauges was never getting over 11c then the thermostat has failed.

Where is the sensor located Malcolm? If it's near the air intake box could the mod be shielding it from the cold ?

I believe the temp sensor is located behind the front bumper on the passenger side, i will have a look tomorrow.

The external sensor is just behind the near left hand hand side, just by the side of the number plate if this one at fault, they often shoot way over 36

It may have just been a glitch, i will keep an eye on it. The sensors are only about £15 on ebay so not a big issue if it has to be replaced.

Air cleaner replacemnt

For any one interested i have just changed my air cleaners in the SL. This is a simple 20 - 30 min job that if i can do it then anyone can. I bought the Bosch air cleaners on ebay for £10. My indy quoted just over £100 so i made a decent saving.

Could you see the old ones were dirty when you took them out?

Great saving so well done. I find it quite satisfying to do small jobs as it also gets you to know the car better.

Do you have a link to ones you bought?

Me too. If you do this throughout the year then when it's service time it seems free as you already have everything to hand and don't have to worry about things being out of stock.
