Now a 2005 55 plate C Class 220 CDI Estate Auto in Iridium Silver with Black Nappa Leather.
Well chaps and chapesses. I have spent several hours after a quick hand wash at a local car wash yesterday going over the car;a 2004 SLK 230 Auto in paint code C723 Pewter Silver Metallic with Black Leather with Charcoal inside 'painter' trim colour and finding the areas that haven't been touched, cleaned since it was PDI'd in 2004.
The inside of the petrol filler cap closely resembled the lid of a Whellie Bin that needed a good dose of Karcher.

There are a few areas of paintwork that will need looking at (my personal choice) and then I will feel it is mine

I have polished (BOORA) the car except for the front and rear bumpers and thoroughly cleaned all of the glass inside and out,the bumpers will be done tomorrow, then I will take some images of it for posting (another section of the forum).

Don't forget to give the steering wheel and the gear shift a good clean. You will be surprised what you grab hold of every time you drive the car :eek:

Today I set out to do a B Service- all filters, engine oil in this case- on our W251 R320. Firstly some filter & oil porn for you DIYers...

The OM642 engine is a marvel of design compactness and truly a joy to work on. Why put the air filters on top of the engine, wasting height volume, when instead our intrepid Stuttgart design engineers can tuck them away elsewhere?

Firstly the strut brace and engine covers are removed. The strut brace is really the turbo NVH shield, masquerading as a piece of turret armour off the Tirpitz judging by its solidity. Thus:

Yes. It IS a fag butt.

And new filters in.

Pop off the cowling assy (2 clips) and pull the old filters out, replace with new. Ensure the new filters are installed flat and flush- one can get both hands into the air box. (I didn’t get an image of the new, but they’re the Mann Frecious Plus- see box).

Skinned knuckles already there Craig
Matt, there’s more blood drops on the engine than there is oil. That 251 engine bay is a design in sharp edges!

Nothing but the best for FunBus, she is getting Fuchs Titan fully synthetic.

Oil filter is handily located at the top of the engine. Equally handily it requires a socket bigger than the one for the M113’s filter, so I bought a chain wrench.

The filter housing has some oil pooling at the bottom so be sure to mop this up.

When Mr Sealey’s slowest vacuum pump has finished doing its sucking (per) I’ll let you know...

Might jump on an No.9 bus, but the mess it’s made caused quite a fuss... and now the FPO is wondering why I’m sniggering to myself on the driveway.

Hi AJD. Thank you. I must be honest I was chasing my tail and was going to leave them until tomorrow when I get back to what I had started;however a few more minutes and a Mr Muscle De-greaser spray and a few strokes of the brand new white cloth (IKEA Cotton Face Cloth) and the moderate muck was transferred onto the cloth.

Removed the exhaust and heat shields and found a sorry state of affairs with the parking brake compensator and cables.

Removed it, cleaned it, cut the old cables, installed new parking brake cables and made sure this time the compensator was properly seated and adjusted with its pivot point engaged properly, and the return spring was in the correct place (it wasn’t).

Tomorrow I strip down the parking brake system, fit new shoes, springs and expansion buckles and connect the new cables. This parking brake is going to work properly if it kills me!

Currently the compensator is lubricated with Wurth HHS2000 and White Lithium grease. Is that sufficient, or should I liberally apply conventional grease?

Good god alive! Had they used those filters as garden trowels???

Performance & economy should see a monster hike now Craig!
Well, I swapped out the filters on the 215. They’ve done 44k, and still obviously yellow with a few shredded bits of leaf in. That’s what I’d expect. The ones off that 251- Dark grey... together with the cabin filters I could probably have made compost and planted live seeds from them.

Washed it in readiness for a tow to the midlands tomorrow where I'll stay on a farm CL overnight to get to a first thing meeting on a potential gig.

Hopefully there won't be green eyes in the evaluation process :(
